Im wondering if anyone else has experienced speed issues when connecting through the AC2600 using OpenVPN.  It is used by a small business where 3-5 employees run Remote Desktop sessions to a single server.  I also tried PPTP with the same slow results.  As a work around, we have a port open on the firewall to connect RDP without the VPN, and that is blazing fast.  I expected that the overhead of having a VPN would slow things down a bit, but it is unusably slow.  Ive been in IT for 20 years, so I have tried the easy stuff.  Any suggestions or troubleshooting questions would be appreciated

Hello @mec13417

Are you configuring the OpenVPN VPN server on the C2600, and connecting to this server from the office? Please be aware that OpenVPN requires quite a lot of processing power, relative compared to other VPN protocols.

Can I confirm how did you measure the transfer speed? Using an Internet speed test like www.speedtest.net? How about the internet speed when connecting to the router but not via VPN?

Have you maybe enabled some features on your router that use up additional processing power? Like QoS, or some Parental Controls?

  Hi @Kevin_Z ,

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I am using the OpenVPN Server functionality of the Archer C2300.  There server is a windows box on the internal network.  The clients are also windows boxes in various locations around Orlando.  We have 4 clients that will connect at various times.

The processor speeds on the 2 CPU's of the c2300 never go above 10%.

I have disabled all of the additional security features on the router (content filter, intrusion prevention, parental controls).  I don't see where I can "disable" QOS, but I do have the server as a priority in QOS.  I have run a speed test on both the client and the server.  They both have about 200mbps down and 10-15mbps up.  Since the lag is between the server and client when they are connected, I used a utility called IPerf to measure speed between them.  That test shows 210kbps down and 32kbps up.

Primarily, I am just using the VPN for RDP access to a server.  If I open a port on the firewall to connect directly to the server (without VPN), it is lightning fast.

@mec13417

Regarding the QoS configuration, you may refer to the following guide to turn it off:

How to turn off the QoS feature on TP-Link Router? (Case 3)

One last thing, I would also suggest you try resetting the C2300 to factory defaults, set it up and connect to the internet, then enable the OpenVPN server again, but please don't modify other advanced settings on it, try to test and monitor the client to server speed again.

If the speed is still slow, I would suggest escalating the case to our support engineers for further troubleshooting. We will contact you with your registered email address later. Please pay attention to your email box for follow-up. Thank you.
