Model: Archer C6
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.3.6

I have set up openVPN on my router and exported the ovpn file but whenever I try to connect from other devices outside the network it says 'timeout: unable to connect'. What can be the potential issues/errors?

I even tried DDNS but it also doesn't works.

If your C6 WAN IP address is starting with "10." then it's a private IP address.

If you don't have another ISP provided device (modem/router) sitting in front of the C6, contact your ISP for assistance.

A probable cause can be that WAN IP address of your C6 router could be a private IP address.

If you ping DDNS and compare the IP address resolved with the C6 WAN IP address, they should be the same for OpenVPN to work.

If they are different then a private IP address has been assigned to your C6 WAN port.

By the way there's a newer FW release for your C6 v2 - v1.3.7 - here.

Yes, the DDNS resolved IP address and WAN IP are different (one starting like 202.xxx.xxx.xx and WAN is 10.xx.xxx.xxx). And I cannot ping either of them from outside network. What can I do to resolve this?

I do have a modem that takes in fiber optic cable and outputs a ethernet cable to the router and that is provided by the ISP. What should I do in this case?

Call your ISP and ask them to configure your modem in bridge mode (if possible) so you can receive your public IP address on the C6 WAN port.

If they can't do that, ask them to configure DMZ on their modem to your C6. In either case you should configure port-forward/virtual server for OpenVPN ports on your C6.

For OpenVPN server port-forwarding refer to this thread.

If they can't do either of these for you, you won't be able to use the OpenVPN server from an external network.

I contacted my ISP but they cannot do any of the 2 proposed solutions. I guess I can't setup the VPN :(  . If you know of any other way I can access my home network (like NAS, etc) from outside the network please let me know.
