If the ADSL2 modem already gets the router function, I think you can set up the TP-LINK as a access point, try this:
1. Connect a computer to the router by using an Ethernet cable, use 192.168.1.1 to open the web console of the router. Go to DHCP, disable the DHCP sever.
2. if the IP address of the TL-MR3220 is the same as the ADSL modem router, change it to a different one. you can find it under Network →LAN.
3. restart the router after you finish all the settings, and then connect the ADSL modem router to the LAN port on the TP-LINK.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already tried that, but sadly no luck.

Can you tell me how do you access internet when the computer is connected to the ADSL2 modem router? Is it like plug-and-play?

When connected through the ADSL2 modem router, I connect wirelessly and I connect straight throughto the internet..

I have obviously set the TL-MR3220 router up with a different SSID and I have no probem accessing the home page of the the TL-MR3220 when connected to it's wireless signal.

I have also changed the address of the the TL-MR3220, so that the home page is not the same as the home page for the ADSL2 modem router.

It would help me a great deal to know whether the the TL-MR3220 should actually be doing what I want it to do. I can obviously try and endless permutation of settings on the two pieces of equipment, but if it is never going to work it would be good to know that before I carry on on with that exercise.

Hi. You need to access your tp link and disable dhcp and assign a different ssid. You link the 2 routers together via Ethernet lan part to lan port.

Manually set up an ip address subnet and gateway for the tp link using the same subnet as your other router. The ip address should not be in the dhcp pool that the other router will assign.

Ie subnet could be 255.255.255.0 on both routers. Your isp router could have an ip of 192.168.1.1. your tp link ip could be 192.168.1.2. The dhcp pool that the isp router will assign will be 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.254
The gateway for the tp link will be the isp routers lan address. The above example 192.168.1.1

In your first post you connected lan to wan. This will create a second network and the router will not see each other nor the device on the opposite router.

I have the setup that your trying to achieve with the same tp link router. Its been working great for me.

The second one is to use the MR3220 as a wireless router. How to do, please refer to the following:
connect the TD-8840T from its LAN to the WAN port of MR3220;
login to the MR3220's web management page (you can find the default login address and authentication on the bottom label);
go to Network, choose WAN only as the internet access;
go to Network, LAN, change the IP address to 192.168.2.1 (i suspect the TD-8840T is using 192.168.1.1)
go to Network, WAN, choose Dynamic IP as WAN connection type;
go to wireless part to rename and secure your wireless network.
Don't forget to reboot the router to make all the modification take affect.

Thanks a lot Matthew. just a little more question regarding the DHCP server. I think in both cases (mr3220 as wireless router and access point) the 8840T must have the dhcp disabled, acting exclusively as modem. Could you confirm me this?

I don't agree with you.
The TL-MR3220 can be used as a wireless AP is based on the condition that the TD-8840T has router function and its DHCP is enabled.
While using the MR3220 as a wireless router is to use its WAN interface, the DHCP on the wireless router can co-exist with the modem's DHCP. This works like you link two routers in the same network.
