Model: Archer C64
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.14.3 Build 241025 Rel.69770n(4555)

Hello,

After updating to the latest firmware, my Archer C64 started freezing, and I can no longer connect to it either online or within the local network.
The only solution that works is a physical reboot. The issue occurs every 1-2 hours.

I have a main router and two secondary ones set up with EasyMesh. Before the update, everything was working perfectly.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to downgrade to the previous firmware version (e.g., Archer C64(EU)_V1_1.13.15 Build 240812) from:
https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/archer-c64/#Firmware

In the logs, I see the following entries:

158 INFO 0days, 00:11:21, [upgrade]start upgrade
159 ERROR 0days, 00:11:21, [upgrade]SID not match, 0x5545:0x5355

170 ERROR 0days, 00:11:21, [upgrade]main version 0x10d00 is smaller than 0x10e00!

Considering that resolving this issue might take time, I kindly ask you to provide instructions on how to downgrade to the previous firmware version.
These problems have rendered my device almost unusable, and I urgently need a solution.

Thank you!

@Alt_Bird Hi. From what I understand, the issue might be related to RTMP.

Keep in mind that I have the physical version V1 (EU) of the router.
If you have the same version, try installing the beta firmware and leave your feedback here to let us know if the issue gets resolved.

I've updated two standalone C64 routers (one in router mode and another in AP mode) few hours ago and they seem to be working fine. Maybe this issue comes when there are few of these connected in an Easymesh. A factory reset could help in such cases. Usually if the new FW version can't be downgraded there is a special note about it in the FW release notes.

The worst part is that I can’t even check the logs from the device to understand what’s going wrong, as it becomes completely inaccessible.
At the same time, it seems like the satellites are functioning but cannot connect to the main router.

No, there were no mentions of issues like this in the release notes. Also, while the official release notes are often trimmed, here we can see the full details:
https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/archer-c64/#Firmware
I have the EU version of the router, so the downgrade should work.

Have you updated the satellite routers to the latest release as well already ?

If you have made a coonfiguration backup prior to the FW update try to reset the main router to its factory defaults and restore the configuration from backup.

Reset the satellite routers to their factory defaults as well and rebuild the Easymesh, then test how it goes.

Do you receive any error message when you try to downgrade to v1.13.15 ?

Yes, they update simultaneously with the main router. To downgrade them, I would, of course, need to reset them and reconnect them to the main router.

I already mentioned in my first message that I encounter errors when trying to downgrade.

No, unfortunately

To be honest, I’m tired of being an unofficial tester for updates. Whether it’s cameras or routers, there are always some issues.

I meant any errors in the router WebGUI (not in the System Log) while you're executing the FW downgrade process:

Before making a FW update always backup the configuration in order to restore it after upgrading.

Or, write down all the settings you changed from the default values, you may need to re-enter them manually:

How to Backup & Restore configuration of TP-Link Wireless Router?

If you don't have an old configuration backup you still can make one now, reset the main router to its factory defaults and then test as i've described earlier.

For the satellite routers you don't have to make a configuration backup before resetting and rebuilding the Easymesh.

So, here’s what I need to do ?:

  1. Create a backup.
  2. Reset the router to factory settings.
  3. Downgrade the firmware (if possible).
  4. Attempt to restore the backup.

But we both know that restoring from the backup probably won’t work, and I’ll end up having to configure a lot of things manually from scratch (if the downgrade even succeeds).

If you make a configuration backup now, I would assume that even if the FW downgrade procedure fails, you would be able to restore your configuration and then rebuild the Easymesh.

I've had noticed that after implementing some new features in a FW release FW downgrading is not possible due to these newly introduced features.

Usually TP-Link notes that in the FW release notes as a warning that this FW release iis not downgradable (not in this case as we all already see that).

So my idea was mainly pointed at resetting the routers to their factory defaults and then check if there's any improvement when rebuilding the mesh.

By the way sometimes reconfiguring the main router from scratch helps too.

Of course if you're not comfortable witlh doing all this, you can wait an official response on that by a TP-Link representative.

@terziyski Thanks for your insights and explanations.

Yes, unfortunately, backup files are essentially VxWorks structure, so we can't directly modify things like the firmware version (it changes after update) in the config file or remove conflicting settings, for example (see first post logs).
That’s precisely why downgrading is impossible, unlike with OpenWrt, where a backup is simply a zip archive of files that can be easily modified.

Let’s hope that the developers will fix the issues introduced with the improvements in this version. In the meantime, I’ll keep you all updated on the problem, and perhaps we can identify the root cause of the freezes.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the discussion, and I hope this issue will be escalated to the engineers.
