Model: Deco S7
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I know this is not the newest fairly low-range consumer product with infrequent software updates (if any), but I would expect core features to work. I'm considering boxing an S7 and returning it to Amazon under a 30-day warranty. The most annoying is devices are not being discovered and displayed.

I used a 3-pack Deco P9 for 4 years in "Access Point" operational mode, which was mostly good. I decided to get better coverage in the remote corners. Since I installed Ethernet in the core spots and did not want to break the bank, I went with a 3-pack S7. The S7 would replace the existing P9 in the core with an Ethernet backhaul. The existing P9 moved to the edge with the Powerline backhall.

Although S7 and P9 are in a similar range, I thought that S7 was newer. I knew that more expensive HW comes with more features. After trying to create a new network (with S7 being the master and P9 as a member), I got a "Reselect Main Deco" hint.

Therefore, decided to add 3-pack S7 as members to 3-pack P9, with P9 still being the master.

I got used to the option to see which device is connected to, and this feature is no longer working. Wired and Wireless devices are connected and are not showing at all. Or all clients listed as clients on the main unit (iPhone app). I have a really big space, and I know this is not the case.

Besides, one P9 were showing offline (while the white light was on and the wired client was working fine). But the problem is gone after power cycling stuck P9 a few times.

Other symptoms: Main P9 showing 95-100% CPU via Web GUI.

I tried restarting the whole setup with no effect. Fast roaming: Disabled. Beamforming: Enabled.

all S7 v1 running Deco S7(EU)_V1_1.5.2 Build 20240927

all P9 v1 running Deco P9(EU)_V1_1.2.1 Build 20240716

In the past, there was a fairly comprehensive feature compatibility table on this website on what features would work depending on the master Deco unit and member units. I'm unable to find the details, it seems it got replaced with vague "it all works together" and "Have more than one Deco model" KB with priority orders only visible in the app.

I moved router/NAT/DHCP mode to Omada ER605 (in standalone mode, no controller) years ago to offload Deco from unnecessary tasks. And ER605 has multi-ISP support. This is a family home network, and I want to configure everything once and not get back to dealing with family member complaints. Naming all devices and seeing which Deco is connected is a great feature for pinpointing issues.

Summary of the questions:

1. Can the missing and unmapped client's issue be addressed with Beta firmware etc? Perhaps something else is required - getting to Router mode and running DHCP.

2. Will promoting S7 to master completely disable Powerline backhaul across P9 units?

3. In running P9/S7 mix with S7 deliver better overall result? Perhaps S7 has slightly more RAM / CPU

4. Is it normal for the P9 master CPU to run at 95%. Not sure if it was the same before S7 addition.

5. Can I promote S7 to master without deleting the network and starting from scratch? Promote to master in a GUI is only available against P9 units (in the current P9 master network)

Hi, thanks for posting question here.

Here are some suggestions towards your questions:

1. Please update Deco app to latest from Google Play or Apple Store. You may switch AP mode into router mode then check again.

2. Yes, only when Deco P9 works as main Deco, the Powerline Backhual possibly works.

You may refer to the guide to know more: General Questions about the Powerline or PLC Backhaul Feature of Deco

3. It is hard to say, as the performance is the results of many aspects, not only depending on network devices.

4. About the CPU usage, you may remove S7 for a comparison. But more Decos would bring more burden to P9. If the network is normal, which is not necessary to worry about.

5. Yes, you may add S7 as satellite Deco and switch it as main Deco following the guide: How to replace the main Deco with another Deco

The two guides are salso fro your reference:

What’s the difference between Access Point mode and Router mode on the Deco?

How many Deco units can I add to my Deco mesh network?

Thank you and best regards.
