Archer VR2800 router loses power
Hello,
I bought the Archer VR2800 on 8 October 2018. It has been fine until this morning. I had an issue with a laptop PC so rebooted the router. The LEDs come on followed by the power LED and it appears to be booting up okay.
But then all the lights go off. I repeat the process 3 times but no joy. Even tried a reset with a pin but still no joy. Very disappointed a quality product appears to have stopped working. Can you provide any assistance please? Unable to provide Hardware and Firmware versions as I cannot gain access to the software.

Performing a factory reset has cured the problem. The router has been performing normally for the last 24 hours. Panic over.

None of those links provided any useful information. Just to confirm the router starts to boot up but then all the LEDs go off as does the power LED. It’s as dead as a dodo and I’ve only had it two years.
If it really has given up working how about offering to repair it? 200 GBP and it doesn’t work. Not happy.

Just seen your post re dead vr2800.
Having a vr900 and others for many years - and running tp-link 'confidential' firmware on v2 hardware with v3 firmware / software sent to me via 'UK - support' ?
I am aware of some of the problems with there routers etc.
Re your problem.
By coincidence I am now also running a VR2800 - had a few weeks, just for info I checked how much current the router takes in normal operation.
my thinking is maybe your power supply (PSU) may have a problem.
Using a external bench psu set to 12v dc. The router draws approx 0.7A (8.2 W) while connected to internet, I also have a USB hdd connect which is idle.
You mentioned you pushed the 'reset' button ? was just a quick put to reboot it, or a push & hold to factory reset it ?

@Gary-M5YRG many thanks for your helpful replies Gary. The router was working fine at 09:00 when I discovered I couldn't transfer a file to another computer on my network. I tried repairing the connection but that didn't work so tried turning the router off and back on.
That's when I discovered it wouldn't boot up. It gets so far then all the lights go off. The power adaptor hadn't changed so it would seem odd that would be the cause.
I only held the power button down temporarily so will try holding it down for longer. 20 secs okay?
If all else fails I'll need to contact TP-Link UK I guess.

Hi Ray.
I have been to and had many faults with PSU's while being a I.T./ Network field service engineer, failing due to power surges etc, the expression 'lights on - no one in'?
your psu could have a fault, and is putting out a lower voltage just enough to light up but not able to fully start the router etc.

@Gary-M5YRG I suppose the only way to establish if the PSU is faulty is to use another. Are they fairly generic or do I need a TP_Link one?
I've found the UK website and my receipt shows I bought it in Oct 2018 so it's still under warranty. I'll speak or write to UK support and see what they suggest.

As i have a suitable generic supply - as mentioned in 1st post my VR2800 draws approx .7a @ 12V.
I think it would be best - as mentioned you contact TP-link as the router is still under there warranty etc.
Just for piece of mind etc, If you have a volt / multimeter could check the volts from the psu to see if it is at 12 Volts ?

@Gary-M5YRG , I don’t have a way of measuring the output from the PSU sadly. I’ll see if I have a suitable PSU as that would help with the diagnosis. I’ll then contact TP-Link as it’s a warranty thing.

Hi Ray.
In that case I would suggest you just contact TP-Link for the Warranty Enq.
As you have noway to confirm a psu is operating at a correct voltage & polarity etc.
Just plugging a random PSU in could to more halm than good.

@Gary-M5YRG I have a BT Smarthub disc with its own PSU which fits into the VR2800. Tried it and exactly the same problem. All lights go off after around 20 secs of booting up.
That seems to rule out a faulty PSU. I'll contact TP-Link UK for advice. Thanks once again.
