M9 was announced nearly 5 years ago, so EOL is not unreasonable from a sales point of view. I'd still expect the promised 1.6.x firmware, and security fixes for another year or so.

@David-TP Just checked my primary M9 with an IR thermometer "gun" - it's 34.5C. (Room temp is 20C). (ps still on 1.5.6 firmware)
