I started using the ac1200/archer c64 I was wondering if I could use my old wr820n v1 as an extender or repeater?

Unlike the WR820n v2 which supports four working modes:
You can use your WR820n v1 except as a wireless router but also as a wireless access point - check this guide (Method 2).
