Parental Controls slowing down throughput - VR1600v
Hi TP-LINK and ALL,
I have two TP-LINK routers - VR1600v v2, each with the firmware below:
Firmware Version: 0.1.0 0.9.1 v5006.0 Build 210413 Rel.19548n
Hardware Version: Archer VR1600v v2.0 00000000
Firmware Version: 0.1.0 0.9.1 v5006.0 Build 190228 Rel.72265n
Hardware Version: Archer VR1600v v2 00000000
Every time I switch on the parental control in the modem, the bandwidth/speed of the Internet access is reduced by 3/4 - this is shown in ookla speed test.
That is, if my broadband speed is 200Mbps, when the parent control is turn on, the VR1600v will slow down the Internet access speed to ~50Mbps.
It seems there is a firmware issue in the VR1600v modem router.
Does anyone experience the same problem?
Is there a fix?

It is not a firmware issue.
When the parental control or QoS is enabled, the network data will be processed and forwarded by the CPU directly.
For VR1600V, the NAT throughput of the CPU would be around 100M/s.
Compared to 100m/s, 50 m/s is still below the service.
May I know how did you run the speed test, over 5ghz or Ethernet connection?
Are you able to test the Ethernet connection speed from the modem directly?

It varies ~50-70Mbps.

It's Australian NBN Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) set at 250Mbps.

Yes - the Internet speed is ~250Mbps. That's when the Parental Control (QoS) is not turn on.

@Martian I just found out the hard way with this too. Any update to if it is just a vr1600v limitation?

I don't think there is a fix yet. My guess is that the problem is too fundamentally embedded in the design (e.g. within the hardware or chips etc.) which firmware alone can't fix it.
I have since deployed VR1600v merely as a dummy Internet router gateway in bridge mode and nothing else and invested more on extra hardware and implemented the parental controls in the extra hardware - mesh controller(s) - that connects to the VR1600v as a workaround.
That works out fine as long as you are willing to spend more.
