Hello, I have this very same issue.
I am in Sweden in the EU using the RE450 with an ASUS RT-AC68U router. My RE450 BIOS is version 1.0.0 Build 20161202 Rel. 56846. Updated from the EU-region download section of the TP-Link website. It seems EU has not received the latest possible patch, available in the US and other regions.
2.4GHz is connecting but has some severe stability issues. The connection seems to drop out, frequently.
5.0GHz can be detected and selected using the RE450 network scanner but the RE450 is not connecting to this network.
In the log I get hundreds of lines such as these:
0 days 00:12:38 WIRELESS ERROR 2.4/5GHz failed the connection to the front end, due to: Connecting timed out.
0 days 00:13:06 WIRELESS ERROR 2.4/5GHz failed the connection to the front end, due to: Connecting timed out.
0 days 00:13:06 WIRELESS ERROR 2.4/5GHz failed the connection to the front end, due to: Connecting timed out.
0 days 00:13:06 WIRELESS ERROR 2.4/5GHz failed the connection to the front end, due to: Connecting timed out.
0 days 00:13:06 WIRELESS ERROR 2.4/5GHz failed the connection to the front end, due to: Connecting timed out.

I have tried:
- Experimenting with different 5GHz channels such as 40, 44, 48 etc etc.
- Experimenting with different channel bandwidth such as 20, 40, 80 MHz
- Changing the SSID names and passwords of all channels
Nothing is working to remedy the issue above.

In my opinion, it is hard to figure out what exact the problem is , better can provide more info to the tp-link support, such as the router model, system log or something, so they can help you further analysis it to figure the issue.

how can I get a log? The problem is not with my router. It works fine with RE200/210 so I suppose it is related to RE450 itself.

I finally have a solution to my problem. There is a bug that was introduced in the last few firmware releases after 160727. The problem is that the RE450 status page displays the wrong MAC address for the RE450 Range Extender Extended 5GHz.
The work-around is to disable MAC filtering on the 5GHz network of your router. This should allow the RE450 to connect to the 5GHz network of the router. At this point you should look for the list of connected devices to your router. You can find the actual MAC address the RE450 is using from there. Once you find the actual MAC address the RE450 is using, you can add that to your MAC filter whitelist and re-enable MAC filtering.
Fortunately, only the first octet of the MAC address listed on the status page of the RE450 is incorrect. For example, the RE450 might display the following MAC address: C4-E9-84-B8-E7-AE. However, the actual MAC address it is using might be listed on the router as C2-E9-84-B8-E7-AE. You can use the last five octets in the MAC address listed on the RE450 status page to identify the actual MAC address the RE450 uses to connect to your router.

Hopefully, TP-Link will fix the bug they introduced in a future firmware release.

That is not correct. The RE450 does not have a proxy mode option. All traffic to the router is sent via the MAC address of the RE450 (universal mode). This is why it is important that this bug is fixed so that the RE450 displays the correct MAC address for the extended 5GHz.

To anybody that is struggling with connecting to 5Ghz, I found out that you have to reset the router (via the pinhole) and reconfigure it in order for it to connect.

RE450 unable to connect to 5GHz network

Hello,
I am in Jordan in the Middle East using the RE450 with an Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 root router.
5.0GHz can't be detected using the RE450 network scanner, I had set up 5G manually and it is working and the signal is very good in my mobile, but the 5G LED on the extender is not light on.
I have tried:
- Experimenting with different 5GHz channels such as 36, 40, 44, 48 etc. There are no channels under 36.
- Experimenting with different channel bandwidth such as 20, 40, 80 MHz
- Changing the SSID names and passwords of all channels
Nothing is working to let the LED light on.
Please help.
