Poor Wireless Throughput
Region : Others
Model : TD-W8980
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : 0.6.0 1.3 v000e.0 Build 131012 Rel.51720n
ISP :
I bought this modem/router to replace an Airport Extreme that was unable to maintain a PPPoE connection via an external modem.
While the TD-W8980 does a good job with the PPPoE connection, it does a poor job with wireless throughput. Streaming even SD video to a wireless device results in excessive buffering. Most often we watch video streamed to a Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc which hangs off of an Airport Express.
When using the Airport Extreme, we never had buffering issues with this setup; even with HD (720p) video.
With the TP-Link router buffering is extreme and HD video is out of the question.
I have the 2.4 GHz wireless configured as follows:
Mode: 11bgn mixed
Channel: 7 (for reasons unclear to me, if I select "Automatic" the router always chooses channel 1 which is in use by both of my neighbors.)
Channel Width: 40 MHz (I also tried 20 MHz and Auto)
Is there anything I can do to improve video streaming?
