Solution to frequent disconnects and resets in TD-W9870 (and others, probably)

I've recently purchased a TD-W8970 modem/router. I was almost decided to ask for a refund, because it didn't work reliably: continuous disconnection, rebooting, etc. I contacted the support service, and it seems to be a very well known problem for them (and very common, given the number of posts in the forum and in internet). The solution they gave me solved the problem for me. It's working now for two days without any disconnection so far. I've described it in this post:

Very easy solution, and no drawbacks after enabling it.
I think this one deserves to be sticky, and be included in the FAQ.
