Model: Archer BE230
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2 Build 20241125 rel.12918(5553)

Hello TP-Link Community,

I recently upgraded to the Archer BE230 Wi-Fi 7 router, but I’ve been experiencing some frustrating issues with Smart Connect. Here’s what’s happening:

When I move away from the router, my device correctly switches from 5GHz to 2.4GHz because the 5GHz signal weakens (-86dB). However, once connected to 2.4GHz at a much better signal strength (-62dB), my transmit and receive speeds suddenly drop to just 8Mbps—making the internet unusable.

What’s even stranger is that when the 2.4GHz signal is around -74dB, Smart Connect forces me back to 5GHz, even though it’s at a weaker -86dB signal. The 5GHz link speed is only 11Mbps at this point, so the switch makes no sense.

Why is Smart Connect choosing a weaker signal when 2.4GHz still has a strong connection? Also, why does my 2.4GHz speed drop so drastically from 400+Mbps to 8Mbps when I move slightly further from the router?

For reference, my previous Archer A7 handled Smart Connect perfectly, switching seamlessly between bands without these speed drops.

Has anyone else faced this issue, or is there a setting I should tweak to improve band selection and maintain better speeds? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

UPDATE :

turning off Smart connect and setting both 2.4ghz and 5ghz ssid names to the same name fixes all the issues

@terziyski i understand smartconnect might have issue with multiple APs but im only using one AP here ie Archer BE230 and i compared my experience with my previous AP ie Archer A7 where smart connect was perfect, also i dont understand that smart connect off along with same ssid names work better than smartconnect

Hi@Yesrab,

May I know what is the model of the client you are using? Have you compared different mobile phones or wireless clients?
In addition, when your mobile phone automatically switches to 5Ghz, is the signal strength still -86dB?
When you measure the speed of 2.4Ghz and it is 400Mbps, what is the 5G speed at this time?

If wireless speed is slower than expected, please go to Advanced >> Wireless Settings to change the 5GHz Wi-Fi channel, you may try different channels to find the best one for your environment. Changing Channel and Channel Width on a TP-Link Router (new logo)

Disable SIP ALG and UPNP, please go to Advanced >> NAT Forwarding >> UPNP to disable UPNP, go to Advance >> Security to disable SIP ALG.

How do I log into the web-based Utility (Management Page) of TP-Link wireless router?
