Model: Deco X50
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.8 Build 20240731 Rel. 8910

Hi,

I have a 3-device mesh set up using X-50 units. One is connected by cable to my Internet Provider's router, and the others are located on another floor below. It used to work fine but since I moved to a new place, the thick brick walls block the signal and I get very low speeds (40 Mbps downstairs vs 800+ Mbps upstairs).

The space configuration doesn't allow for placement of another X50 unit. I need to attach it upside down to a ceiling. Hence, the X50-PoE looks to be the perfect model to amplify the signal downstairs.

My question: can I use the X50-PoE, connect it via cable to the primary X50 unit and have it deliver the signal to the two X50 units on the floor below? Will I need a power cable for the X50-PoE as well, or does X50 deliver PoE that is sufficient for the X50-PoE to work?

I'd appreciate any help with this topic since I need the downstairs Wi-Fi to work well for office work.

Deco X50-PoE is compatible with X50s. They both have Connection Preference feature you can use to configure how you want Satellite Deco connect to each other.

I just upgraded my Deco mesh to X50-PoE and I like that Deco model: it has well thought wall/ceiling mounting kit.

You can mount X50-PoE with just Ethernet cable coming to it, without power cable, but you will need to figure how to transmit power over Ethernet to X50-PoE. X50 can't do that.

You have two options:

1. PoE injector, such as TP-Link 2.5G PoE+ Injector (TL-PoE260S)

2. Alternatively, PoE capable Ethernet switch, such as TP-Link 5-Port 2.5G Desktop Switch with 4-Port PoE++ (TL-SG105PP-M2)

If you go with the switch, you connect one of its ports to X50 and connect Ethernet cable coming from X50-PoE to power providing port of that switch.

These are just examples, to give you an idea. When you research these options, I recommend to limit search by TP-Link brand, to make sure device you buy supports TP-Link Deco Ethernet backhaul. Either that, or really good return policy so that you can send device back for refund if it does not work with Deco mesh.

Also, I would suggest to test the whole set (power injector device, Ethernet cable, X50-PoE) before you lay that cable through walls/ceiling and mount Deco unit.

You can save few dollars if you go with gigabit device (injector or PoE switch) vs. 2.5 gigabit.

  @Alexandre. Thanks! I looked into this and ordered an injector. The X50-PoE is a large unit and won't be the most aesthetic addition to the interior design, but it's not too bad. I thought it would be smaller :)
