Hi,

Due to increasing problems with my BT Whole Home WiFi discs, I have installed 3 x BE550 units. One is the base unit and I have two MESH satellites. The coverage is still quite poor throughout parts of the house even with this set up and the fact that we had to have 4 BT discs in the house and one in the garage probably gives an indication it's more the shape, size and construction of the house that causes the issues rather than the underlying performance of the TP Link units. Currently the MESH is setup using WiFi however I will be connecting the satellties to Ethernet for wired backhaul imminently.

I am trying to determine the best unit(s) to purchase for our top (3rd) floor and whilst I realise I can use any EasyMesh device (the manual even recommends adding less powerful devices as satellites), surely unless I install more BE550 units, I won't be getting the full benefit from the MESH system. I could for example add two BE230 units for the price of another BE550 but then that's only dual band so any devices on the 6G network may not even be handed off to them and then struggle with connectivity by trying to remain connected to the BE550s downstairs.

I can't find how the hand off between nodes works. Is it just based on signal strengh, how much traffic is passing through any one satellite or are there other factors?

I am leaning towards a couple of BE230s (one may be sufficient) as most of the WiFi devices on the top floor don't move around and I just need that extra bit of signal coverage but having spent a fair bit on 3 x BE550s I don't want to "degrade" the system.

I hope that all makes sense!

Hi,

As a side note. If you connect the two satellite BE550 to the main BE550 via Ethernet cables, then you should be able to position them further apart from each other and hence cover a larger area. Perhaps you want to try this first before deciding on additional Mesh units.

Actually, that's a very good point!
