Hello,

I currently have a TP-Link Deco Mesh Wi-Fi system in my home network, which uses an Ethernet backhaul.

I am currently having a switch of d link which is the basic one and supports only 100 mbps .

I’m considering adding a better switch to enhance network performance. However, I have a few questions:

  1. Best Switch Recommendation:

    • Which switch from TP-Link would you recommend for seamless integration with my Deco Mesh system? managed or unmanaged ?
    • Is the TL-SG108E or any other model suitable for this setup?
  2. Setup Guidance:(if in case of managed switch)

    • How do I properly configure a managed switch with Deco Mesh?
    • Are there specific settings (e.g., VLAN tagging, IGMP snooping, or disabling DHCP) I need to enable for compatibility with the Deco units?
  3. Potential Conflicts:

    • Since the Deco system handles DHCP and routing, how do I ensure there’s no conflict between the managed switch and the Deco network?
    • Can I use the switch to manage the Ethernet backhaul between Deco units?

I’d appreciate a step-by-step guide or any tips for optimizing my network with a managed switch.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,
Ajmal T

I would recommend unmanaged switch.

TP-Link recommends TL-SG108 for 8-port unmanaged switch. I like your choice better, because TL-SG108E has LED lights that show link speed - very useful feature when it comes to troubleshooting issues with wired links between Deco units and switch. Yet, TP-Link labels TL-SG108E as "Smart switch" which seems to be not exactly unmanaged but not fully managed switch.

Here is what you can do: get TL-SG108E switch from retailer with good return policy and try it. If you are confident your Ethernet wiring is good and will never cause you issues, go with TL-SG108, it'll cost you less.

If you go with unmanaged switch there are no things to worry about, when it comes to configuring of Deco Ethernet backhaul.
