Has there been any progress on Sky Q and Deco Mesh compatibility in the last few months? I'm having problems making them work together and have read comments from the last few years on this and Sky forums about issues, but without ever finding any of them really being resolved.

I have a Sky router (SR203), a main Sky Q box and a Sky Q mini box and 3x Deco PX50 and 1 X50. The main Deco PX50 unit is next to the router and cabled into one of the LAN ports on the Sky router, it's in access point mode and has stable PLC connections to the other two PX50s and a good WiFi link with the X50 (upstairs).

My house isn't old but has solid concrete block walls throughout and the Sky WiFi (essentially a Sky Q mesh) has always struggled with coverage hence my installing a supplementary mesh.

Before I connect the Sky Q boxes (so Sky router cabled into main PX50, 2 x PX50 nodes via PLC and 1 x X50 node via WiFi) my WiFi coverage is excellent and speeds are stable throughout. That's exactly why I bought the Deco system.

When I then set up the main Sky Q box via the PLC of one of the PX50 units various devices (usually phones and a MBP) lose internet connectivity despite showing a healthy connection to the Deco mesh. Unplug the ethernet from the Sky Q box and the other devices reconnect. This happens without fail to the extent that if I want to watch TV I plug the Sky Q box in and if I want internet I unplug it. (Obviously Sky TV from the dish still works regardless)

Additionally, when I plug the Sky Q mini box into the second PX50 node, that node goes into a 'reboot loop'. This involves the Sky Q mini box having connection to both the main Q box and the internet (via it's own proprietory network) for a few seconds before losing that connection. A few seconds later the PX50 node drops out and begins to reboot. Once that has reconnected the Sky Q mini box also reconnects for a few seconds before dropping out again and the cycle repeats. However, if I run a long ethernet cable from the main Deco to the Sky Q mini box the connection is rock solid (tested for several hours without issue) For reference, all Sky products have WiFi disabled (both 2.4 and 5GHz) so they can only be connected via the PX50s PLC.

I have a Sky engineer coming on Sunday and I'm pretty sure they'll say 'we don't support third party mesh systems' but will also be unable to garuantee full WiFi coverage. I'm no network engineer but I'm no mug either so I'd love to know if there's something I'm missing that will solve this problem prior to the engineer telling me there's nothing they can do!  Or is it just a case of all parties getting to absolve themselves of responsibility because 'we don't support third party products' and I just have to suck it up!

Hoping someone here can help.

Many thanks.

Hi, welcome to the community.

Would there be any chance that you could add a picture of your network topology, such as:

Are you able to consistently reproduce this issue?

Wait for your reply and best regards.

Hi David & thanks for your reply.

In red are the types of connection (RJ45 = CAT5/6 consumer issue cables) The Sky SR203 WiFi is turned off on 2.4GHz and 5GHz as are the Sky Q box's WiFi capabilities.

The Sky SR203 is in a small cabinet on top of which the main PX50 sits. There is only one power outlet here so they are both powered through a power surge adapter. I know this isn't ideal but short of installing a double socket myself (not impossible) it's the only solution. I'd be interested to hear if you think this is the problem.

Both of the main issues are consistent: connecting the main Sky Q box cuts internet connection (but not WiFi connection) to various devices every time and connecting the Sky Q mini box sends the 'Games room' PX50 into the 'reboot loop' without fail.

Currently, unless we're streaming TV content via Sky Q we unplug the main Q box and, if we want to watch TV in the games room, we have to run an RJ45 through the house to the Sky Q mini box.

Since my original post I have tried adding an ethernet switch (TP-Link TL-SG105S) with 'Loop Prevention' turned on between the 'Lounge' node and the Sky Q main box and run a long RJ45 to the Sky Q mini box. Although this seems to have solved both issues, I haven't been able to observe its performance over anything other than immediate/short term as it's totally impractical. I have a Sky engineer visiting this weekend and I'll try and persuade them to run that cable externally but it's quite the cable run and not really in their remit.

Any help or advice is much appreciated and I'll obviously update should I find anything out from the Sky engineer.

Many thanks,

Matt.

Damn! The formatting failed! satellite DECO X50 'Upstairs' should be on the right connected to the WiFi line.

  @burgosburgos

Hi, Thank you very much for the update.

I edited the topology a little bit:

(the green dotted line is the topology after adding the switch-TL-SG105S. Did both main and mini Q box connect to the switch directly?)

While waiting for the diagnosis from the Sky engineers, I'll also follow up on your case via email and forward it to the senior engineers to see whether they had any other suggestions.

Thanks again and best regards.

Hi David,

Thanks for updating the diagram and raising the issue with the seniors.

For reference, the Sky Q mini box is no longer plugged in to the 'games room' PX50 as shown in your updated topology. Both the mini and main Sky Q boxes connect directly to the ethernet switch (although for the time being the mini box isn't connected as I don't want a cable running the entire length of the house!)

And the system is as fast and stable as its ever been - exactly why I invested in the Decos.

Looking forward to seeing how things progress.

Cheers,

Matt.
