VPN Client with NordVpn does not work on Archer BE230 (BE3600)
VPN Client with NordVpn does not work on Archer BE230 (BE3600)
Firmware Version: 1.1.1 Build 20240912 rel.12553(5553)
Hardware Version: Archer BE230 v1.0
Prequisite steps to the tests:
1. Went through all the forum posts similar to the issue, main troubleshooting thread: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/270268
2. Tested my NordVPN in the same network, manually setup openvpn with NordVPN service account with each UDP, TCP ovpn files on my phones using OpenVPN app to make sure the credentials are all working fine and no issues with my ISP.
3. Reset the BE230 router to default configuration, leave it default except for PPPoE.
4. At web admin UI, go to VPN Client -> toggle VPN Client
Test 1: Use Quick Setup
1. At the Server Lists, click on Add Button +
2. Click on NordVPN (logo)
3. Paste my NordVPN login token into the dialog, click on Login by token
4. Select United States - New York, VPN type default WireGuard, click OK to close the dialog.
5. Click on the toggle and click on ENABLE to connect.
6. It says Connected, i can see the ping, ip and dns ips of the connection on mouse hover.
7. Add device list, add my mac, iphone, samsung phone to the list.
8. All my devices do not have access to internet.
Test 2: Use Manual Setup
1. Toggle on the Enable of the NordVPN, delete the server.
2. Add a new server, click on Setup Manually.
3. VPN type select OpenVPN, upload the kr105.nordvpn.com.tcp.ovpn (South Korea - Seoul)
4. Enter username password with NordVPN Service Account credential
5. Click Save, automatically it says connecting.
6. Connected, I can see the ping, ip and dns ips of the connection on mouse hover.
7. Add device list, add my mac, iphone, samsung phone to the list.
8. All my devices do not have access to internet.
Test 3: Use Manual Setup, with provided CA
5. Click on the "Import the CA file or edit the .ovpn file manually", upload the CA file via "Import CA File"
6. Click Save, automatically it says connecting.
7. Connected, I can see the ping, ip and dns ips of the connection on mouse hover.
8. Add device list, add my mac, iphone, samsung phone to the list.
9. All my devices do not have access to internet.
All above tested with IPV6 disabled.
Test 4: Use Manual Setup (exactly with Test 3), with IPv6 Enabled:
9. All my devices have internet connect but all connections are not routed to VPN connection
10. The IP of the devices are still local (provided by ISP).
I believe this is because vpn does not support Ipv6 yet, but still I do think if a client is added into VPN Clients list, it should be filtered both ipv6 and ipv4, should block the ipv6 routing on those devices.
I wish to use this feature so that I do not need to invidual install NordVPN in all my devices.
Please advise.

@Mastesgt21 So you have the router connected on another. router? Interesting that it works, however I'm using the Archer as a single router here, I just got it to upgrade from the ISP's router, so a firmware fix would be a better bet.

Ive just bought the exact same router as it seems this is only wifi 7 router thats works as it should with a ps5 pro, ive just bought a month sub from surf shark to test out the vpn, can connect to all servers but as soon as i connect a device the active VPN seems to act as blocker and cant access the internet.
Current firmware is
Firmware Version
1.1.2 Build 20241125 rel.12918(4555) and not sure if i should test the beta any news from TP link on this with any fixes
@Mastesgt21 Thanks for sharing your workaround and I'm glad to hear that works.
You can also try the provided beta firmware in this thread to check if the VPN also works:

Hi, I have a similar issue on the BE900. I added NordVPN as a VPN client, it says connected but it never changes the ip of the client device.
I tried WireGuard and OpenVPN, tried multiple different servers, it says connected but the ip never changes to the vpn.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Are you saying the client devices are still using the internet connection on the BE900 but not using the VPN connection even though it connects to the VPN Server fine? Please check whether the traffic is passing through the VPN tunnel by visiting whatismyip.com while connected to the VPN. This site will display your public IP address. If your traffic is successfully routed through the VPN, the IP address shown should be different from your original IP address.
If you're still seeing your original location, please ensure that the correct MAC address is selected when adding the device to the VPN Client device list. Sometimes, there are multiple adapters or different MAC addresses on the client device and you may not be selecting the right one.

Hi @Kevin_Z ,
I also made separate report about this topic here.
Yes that's right, whatismyip shows the original country instead of the vpn server.
I double-checked the mac address, and I turned off the "Private Wi-Fi Address" since it's a mac, to make sure it has the same mac address as listed in the router, and whatismyip still shows the original country.
