Model: TL-WPA4220 KIT
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.0.2134-00_422091_160313_903

Hi - I'm new to this community.  A year or so ago I bought a WPA4220(UK) kit with an adapter and an extender with Ver 5.0 hardware and it works well.  I wanted to add another extender and bought a reconditioned one via eBay, because the WPA4220 is no longer available from TP-Link (end of product life I think).  The reconditioned one is Ver 1.20.  I had difficulty configuring it but after using WPS set-up, it does seem to be working.  However the wifi light flickers rapidly whereas the Ver 5.0 wifi light is steady.  Also the TPPLC app will not allow me to change the SSID name of the Ver 1.2 model, as I do not get the "Wireless" option when I click settings on the app.

Any help with this appreciated, but I recognise that the older kit might simply not be fully compatible with the newer.

Hi,

The User Guides that TP-Link provides for each of their products are a good source for finding out how to operate them.

- explanation of the LED indicator lights -> page 3

- change the SSID -> page 14

Wednesday

Thanks for your tips.  The user guide is helpful but showed up some inconsistencies in what I'm seeing:

a) Guide says wifi light blinks when extender has working connection.  The older V1.20 model does blink, but the V5.0 one doesn't.  However I can live with that.

b) It recommends the TPPLC utility but I've seen on some other post that the utility doesn't work for older hardware versions.  However I can use the web interface (connect to  http://192.168.1.1)

c) Manual says its possible to turn off the LEDs but this doesan't work for either unit.

I have also found that the older model is flagged by both my iPhone IOS and MacBook Settings app as having "weak security" on the connection to the older V1.20, and only works on the 2.4G band.   I think this is because the web management inteface doesn't offer an option to select WPA3.  Yes, it is old hardware so maybe it will not support a more secure protocol.  The V5.0 model works securely on both 2.4G and 5G bands.

Does anyone know if a firmware upgrade for the V1.20 unit might fix this?  I have looked on the TP-Link website for firmware updates.  The only ones listed that I can see end in (US) which I suppose means are suitable for US models only.  Do you or does

anyone else know how to locate a download for the most up-to-date firmware that will run on a TL-WPA4220(UK) V1.20 ?

a) -> Please use the correct user manual for each different version of the product.  For the TL-WPA4220 V5 use https://static.tp-link.com/2020/202008/20200824/1910012821_TL-WPA4220(EU)_UG_REV5.0.0.pdf

b) -> Correct.

c) -> Perhaps this is not supported on the V1.2. The V5 should have an "LED Control" option in its web interface. (Menu "Advanced" -> "Device Settings")

For the "weak security" issue you can try the following:

In the web interface of the TL-WPA4220 V1.2 go to the "Wireless Security" menu (refer to picture below) and change "Version" from Automatic to WPA2-PSK and change "Encryption" from Automatic to AES. Normally this should solve the weak security issue.

The TL-WPA4220 (any version) only supports Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band.
