TP-Link Wi-Fi Range Extender 300mbps disconnecting
Installed today and was working fine. I am using it to ensure my wifi reaches my ring doorbell efficiently. I then went to the shop and opened my doorbell footage to find it wasn't connecting so I checked the tether app and found that no devices had been found. Got home and it reconnected and is now showing in my device list. Do I need to be connected to my home wifi at all times for it to work?

You don't have to be connected to your home Wi-Fi at all time for this to work as expected.
Most probably your TP-LInk RE has dropped it wireless connection to your main router for some reason - long distance, main router changed it's wireless channel. etc.
Here's a guide on how to place your RE for optimal reception and performace.
