Model: Deco X50
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.5.5 Build 20240718 Rel. 44414

Hi Everyone,

I have just setup a Deco mesh system with the following components:

X50-DSL Router in hallway at front of house on ground floor

X50 Satellite 1 - Living room at back of house on ground floor, one wall from hallway.

X50 Satellite 2 - Bedroom at rear of house on first floor, ceiling separating it from Satellite 1, ceiling and 1 wall separating it from router.

The X50 Satellite 2 in the bedroom has connected to the router, which is physically further away from it than Satellite 1. Also there is the ceiling and one wall between it and the router. Whereas there is only the ceiling for Satellite 1

Is there something I need to do to get Satellite 2 to connect to Satellite 1?

I can't believe it is optimal for Satellite 2 to connect to the router as it's further away with more physical barriers.

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

Edit: I can see there is the option to manually set the connection preference so I connected Satellite 2 to Satellite 1 and the signal strength is actually marginally weaker. So looks like Satellite 2 to Router is more optimal. I'm guessing there are other variables at play I hadn't considered. Maybe some interference near Satellite 1. So I don't think there is an issue how the system is auto connecting/choosing the preferred node.

Thanks,

Andy

Hi, Thank you very much for the feedback.

I could think of some possible reasons:

Deco uses omnidirectional antennas and The radiation pattern of the wireless antenna has the weakest signal strength in the vertical direction(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnidirectional_antenna). The ceiling in between will also block the wireless signals. So even though satellite 2 is physically closer to satellite 1, the received wireless signal is not optimal.

And connecting to satellite 2 means there are two network hops(main Deco---->satellite 1---->satellite 2). Due to the working pattern and protocol/regulation of Wi-Fi technology, the more wireless hops, the more speed loss and slower the speed would be.

Thanks a lot and best regards.
