I have several M4 WiFi installations so am fairly familiar with the software, etc. I have recently installed a new setup which includes reaching an outhouse at the bottom of a fairly long garden. Partway down said garden is another outhouse so my intention was to fit an M4 in the house, one in the nearer outbuilding and then another in the one at the bottom of the garden. My problem is that the one at the bottom of the garden is linked to the one in the house and the connection keeps dropping out. The one in the nearer outbuilding has a more stable connection and is nearer to the unit with which I am experiencing issues. I have had it on this system where I was able to select the path that the particular extenders take but that option seems to no longer be available. Is there still an option for me to achieve the configuration that I would like?

Just a quick question, can the 1.6.2 units have their firmware reverted to 1.1.2?

You can't use firmware from different hardware version.

This is how to find Deco unit hardware version: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/46/

There is also label on a box in which Deco set comes, where barcode is. After you read this FAQ article you should be able to figure where to find Deco hardware version on a box, without unpacking it.

Here is another option to get Connection Preference feature for Deco M4 with firmware 1.6: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/651248

I think I have an idea why you do not see Connection Preference option for this installation, but I need more information from you to be sure. For that new setup, open its Update Deco page in Deco app, make screenshot and share here.

That page will give the summary of Deco units in the setup and their firmware versions.

As I suspected.

For the same Deco model, such as M4, TP-Link produces it with different hardware versions. Then, it provides firmware with different feature sets for different hardware versions.

You have three Deco M4 on firmware 1.6 (Garden, Living, Louis' Rooms), this firmware does not support Connection Preference. If you need connection preference in that setup, you will need to remove (delete) all three and replace them by three Deco M4 that support Connection Preference, which will be firmware 1.1.2. Same as Kitchen, Living, Utility.

If you have multiple M4 setups, find those that do not require Connection Preference, see if they have M4 with firmware 1.1.2 and swap them with those.

Alternatively, as it appears to be a three-set with firmware 1.6, return it to retailer for refund and get different set with different hardware version, the one that runs with firmware 1.1.2.
