Hi, the range extender needs to receive WiFi from your main router, so it has to be within the WiFi range of the router. If the extender doesn't work when you move it further away from the router, please check if your router WiFi signal is still working or not at the extender location.
Note: If the extender uses the same WiFi name as your router, please unplug the extender when you check router signal.
Regarding the speed issue, please provide more details including your router WiFi speed at extender location, wired and wireless speed of the extender, the distance between your router and extender etc..
In addition, what is the model number, hardware and firmware version of your range extender? and how about the LED status?
