Model: RE200
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version:

I successfully set up an RE200 as an Access point (wired back to the Internet Modem/Router). The RE200 has the same SSID as the main router's WiFi, with -EXT added to the name, and same WiFi password.

Everything works fine for a while, but after several hours clients can no longer connect to the AP (the -EXT SSID) with the message on the client saying "Incorrect Password".

At this point, if I connect to the main router's WiFi and run the Tether app, it shows the RE200 under devices but wont let me connect to (it to check IP settings etc).

Powering the RE200 off and on again fixes the problem.

I've tried running the RE200 with DHCP set to on, off and Auto with same results.

I've also tried setting up the RE200's IP address to be dynamic IP, a static IP (Outside the DHCP range)  and a static IP (Within the DHCP Range) on the main router. Same results.

Any idea what could be causing it to stop working?

Hello  @2Funny

To isolate the problem, you could use a Wi-Fi name for AP that is different from the router's Wi-Fi SSID

This may need some further investigation, can you help confirm some case details

1. How many network devices are connected to AP and what are they?

2. Try to log in range extender web page (use RE's IP address allocated from router)when issue occurs and share a photo of Status page
3. How often does RE lose Internet ,does the problem occur on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz or both.
4. Brand and model of router &  Network topology, e.g.  Router AX1500 <Ethernet> RE200
5. Firmware and hardware version of RE:  How to find the hardware and firmware version of my TP-Link device?
6. When did you buy the extender and how long has it been working fine with the same router in AP mode?

7. Does the issue particularly happen during in certain/ large-traffic network activities , like P2P download, streaming. Gaming etc.

Thank you in advance for help providing case details.

@Solla-topee Hi, apologies for the lack of reply. The problem still exists. After about twelve hours or slightly more, the RE200 running in AP mode stops allowing clients to connect.

In answer to your questions earlier:

  • The range extender is running on latest version of Firmware (V1.0.4 Build 210408 Rel.37106n)
  • I have tried with DHCP set to Auto (default), Off and On - Same problem occurs regardless of DHCP setup. (Currently left in Off)

Details:

1.  There are usually 8 Wifi clients connected to the AP:

2.4 GHz (2)

  • Bauhn Smart TV (192.169.1.102)
  • Chromecast (192.168.1.104)

5GHz Clients (6)

  • FetchTV Box  (192.168.1.138)
  • LG Smart TV (192.168.1.115)
  • Samsung S21 FE (192.168.1.107)
  • iPad (192.168.1.101)
  • Google-Home (192.168.1.101)
  • iPhone (192.168.1.106)

Wired Client (1)

  • TPLink Archer VR1600 (192.168.1.1)

2. Cannot login to the range extender's webpage when the issue occurs. Also can't connect to it via the Tether App (Still appears under My Devices but when selected it says cannot connect). NOTE: I also have a second RE200 (upstairs) which is running in extender mode and it doesn't seem to have any problems.

3. The RE200 (downstairs) running in AP mode drops connection to all it's clients every 12-24hrs on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

4. Network topology is FTTC Broadband with Archer VR1600 TPLink modem router.

    Router ArcherVR1600 <ethernet> RE200 (Downstairs)

                                        <WiFi> RE200 (Upstairs)

                                        <ethernet> 8 port Switch  <ethernet> Printer

                                                                                  <ethernet> Laptop1

                                                                                   <ethernet> Laptop2

5. Hardware v5

    Firmware V1.0.4 Build 210408 Rel.37106n

6. Extender was purchased 4 weeks ago (twin pack) and has always exhibited the problem.

7. I can't identify any particular activity which may be causing the event. Thought it may have been when a mobile phone switches from one WiFi AP to another, but left phones in the one zone all day and problem still occurred. We don't do any P2P or Gaming. Some streaming of video content (but not a lot).

Currently I have setup Address Reservations for Both RE200's in the Archer VR1600 DHCP Server (see 1st pic below) and have manually set the TCPIP address in each RE200 for their appropriate Addresses (192.168.1.90 & 91). These IP addresses are outside the DHCP Server's address pool. I have also tried setting up reservations within the DHCP address pool, and also tried allowing DHCP Server to automatically assign IP's. Problem still occurs with any of these setup's.

While the faulty condition is occurring the log file from the Archer VR1600 (2nd Pic below) shows that every 20sec the DHCP Server is receiving DISCOVER request from the RE200 (MAC B4:B0:24:D9:B7:52) to which it responds with OFFER with 192.168.1.90 but never receives an ACKnowledge.

I also noticed that whether in the fault condition or not, the DHCP Server is receiving DISCOVER requests every 20sec from another device (MAC B4:B0:24:D9:C0:30), and sending OFFER with 192.168.1.100, and never receives and ACKnowledge from that device. I have no idea what that other device is (but it has very similar MAC address to the RE200). I cannot find any device on the network with that MAC address.
