I basically don't want to brick my router.

The reason I want to upgrade, is that sometimes my router simply stops working, it seems active, but not accessible via the wire, nor wireless. I endup having to reboot the router :o/

Do you have the (UN) version ? And what does that (UN) stand for ?

I have no idea what the (UN) stands for, perhaps for universal, or something else, I don`t know.
What I do know is, the latest (TL-WDR3600_V1_130320) firmware works fine on my WDR3600, and as far as I know, I do not have a special (UN)version.

I think it is safe to update your router, but if you want to keep your routersettings, you first need to create a backup config file, because the router goes to default after the firmware update.

I think the UN stands for "Universal", which means the firmware is suitable for the TL-WDR3600 product in most countries in the world.

I had the same problem I used the desktop assistant and this handy program sees problems but has no solutions.
It repeats that the WAN is not good set. And it stopped. No internet connection at all.

I had a solution that made my router work again.

I set the hardware on the router WAN-off.

Made by the webpage of the router (by LAN) a reset.

Than I run the desktop assistent and everything was installed except the WAN.

I have to say that I have to activate the WAN still. But happy I have after upgrading the firmware a connection with the internet again.

I wanted to upgrade because I have a internet radio via LAN that lost the connection after some time.
