This has been working fine until today. Have refreshed and moved physically, and been going around in circles online to try and get the extender to connect to phone and computer. The website is bamboozling and difficult to navigate. Cannot update software but do not know why. Cannot detect extender on app anymore.

@JCee999  Hello, 

1> Please factory reset tp-link range extender and set it up again:  
RESET:  with RE powered on, use a pin to push the reset hole until all the Leds flash once.
On cell phone Wi-Fi settings, connect to Range extender WiFi first ( do not connect to router wifi or and turn off mobile data)
2> Then follow instructions on Tether app or Web page step by step  ( carefully examine the Wi-Fi password you have put in, and it is recommended to create a different SSID/WiFi name for RE )

If the above does not work, please let us know the firmware version& hardware of your range extender, how did you try to upgrade the firmware, and how about the Leds status on RE200? Thank you.
