Can you connect 2 different decos systems to a router to make 2 networks
Can you connect 2 different decos systems to a router to make 2 networks
I am trying to make 2 networks in my house via 2 separate mesh systems (with only 1 router). Is that possible?

Hey
Technically that should be possible, in theory.. Deco 1 into Port 1 of the Router.. Deco 2 into Port 2
I would run this in Router Mode, therefore the first Deco setup would have the address range 192.168.68.x Set this up and once complete, shut it down.
Do the same for the second Deco setup, once completed change its IP to 192.168.69.x range..
This way you can run the two setups and they will be on separate networks, sharing a backbone from your Router.
Never tried this, but should work (in theory)

Hey
Ok so RANGE is your IP address.. if you connect anything to your router it will get an IP address given to it. This will look something like this below
192.168.1.123
Ignore the 192.168. bit.. just concentrate on the last 2x numbers. Ok so these go from 0 to 254 So basically the third number (1 in this case) is the number of your network, and the 4th number (123 in this case) is the specific number of that device on that network.
Ok so say you have three devices and their IP addresses are
192.168.1.13
192.168.1.54
192.168.1.201
As they are all on the 1 network you have Device 13 Device 54 and Device 201
Hope that makes sense so far.
When you setup DECO it create a new network starting 192.168.68.x (network number 68) as you have 2x networks you cant have 2x 68s.. you need 68 and 69 for example
So once you have one of the Deco setup you need to change its IP address from 192.168.68.1 to 192.168.69.1
Info on how to do this is here
https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2331/
So basically once all done you will have 3x network in theory
Router on 192.168.0.x (may be 192.168.1.x but irrelevant)
Deco 1 on 68.x
Deco 2 on 69.x
Anything connected to Deco 1 will get a 68 address, anything on Deco2 will get a 69 address
In terms of what to shut down on the router.. all I would recommend is the following
1. turn off the Router WiFI.. you wont need it with Deco
2. don't use the LAN ports on the router.. except for connecting the 2x master Decos you are setting up.

@Philbert I'm new to this so I'm not sure what you mean by "range".
Also what should I shut down? The router after setting up the deco?
Anyways, thanks for the reply!!!

If basic networking lingo such as "IP range" is not familiar to you, you may wish to explain why do you want two separate mesh systems in your house instead of asking how to do that.
If you can explain what do you want from WiFi mesh, perhaps someone on that forum will be able to offer you a simpler solution, the one that would not cause you headaches in managing it down the road.

I just want a separate network for guests. I currently have 3 decos at my house (for myself) and I wanted to know if adding 3 more decos (connecting it to the same router) will allow me to make a separate network to have different limits on what they can access etc.

Ok scrub that last reply
You might just want to enable guest wifi.. details below
https://www.tp-link.com/fi/support/faq/1461/
Dont be buying new deco for guests, not worth it :)

@Philbert that was just an example and I'm going to use it for myself. All I had to know was whether or not it was possible.

@Philbert I was going to upgrade to the m9plus anyways. So if using two sets of decos would work then all the more reason to buy it.

If you do an upgrade, probably the easiest would be to add new Deco units to existent mesh and, then, delete old Deco units from the mesh. You'll keep all your Deco mesh configuration settings, and replace Deco hardware.
Still, if you really want to have two separate Deco mesh systems, that should be easy. You will need to create new Deco network in Deco app, and configure new Deco units as belonging to this new network. As a result, you'll have two separate Deco mesh networks you can configure independently under same Deco app.
See How to add a new Deco network through Deco app?
As @Philbert said, Main Decos from both Deco mesh networks must be connected to router ports. Also, because these will be totally separate mesh networks, don't worry about IP addresses and ranges - you can let Deco use default settings for those.
