TL-WA1201 AC1200 Wireless Access Point - Devices intermittently dropping packets when connected
PLEASE IGNORE THE MODEL SELECTION - I HAD TO CHOOSE ONE AND MY WIRELESS AP WAS NOT ON THE LIST
I've just installed a TL-WA1201 wireless AP into my home network and wish to use it's multi-ssid feature to broadcast 3 different ssids for the 3 VLANs set up on my network. I have it set up like this:
SSID 1 (2g+5g) - VLAN 20 - IP address 10.0.20.1
SSID 2 (2g+5g) - VLAN 30 - IP address 10.0.30.1
SSID 3 (2g+5g) - VLAN 40 - IP address 10.0.40.1
The issue is when connected to any of the 3 SSIDs devices get intermittent packet loss and I've not been able to find the cause. Things I have tried:
- Loading webpages - about 80% of pages won't load
- Pinging 1.1.1.1 - results in 30-70% packet loss
- Pinging google.com - results in 30-70% packet loss
- Pinging default gateway - results in 30-70% packet loss
- Connecting to every SSID with multiple different devices - issues persist
- Changing ethernet cables - issues persist
- Swapping from PoE injector to direct power - issues persist
- Connecting physically to each vlan with ethernet - no packet loss or internet issues whatsoever
Everything points to the TP link AP being faulty but before I return it I wondered if anyone here had any ideas?

Hi, sorry for the delay.
The TL-WA1201 v2 has a 1× 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Port (Supports Passive PoE).
So how did you test that it is limited to 100m/s?
As for the Archer VR2100, the hidden Wi-Fi Is used for OneMesh feature.
Thank you very much.

Hello everyone,
Here is a new beta for TL-WA1201 for issues when working in multi SSID mode / different VLANs :
https://static.tp-link.com/beta/2021/202106/20210628/TL-WA1201v2_eu-up-ver1-0-1-P1[20210628-rel55053].zip
If your current firmware is not stable enough, please give it a try and feel free to let us know if works for you.
Note: make sure router & AP's IP addresses are on a different subnet from the VLAN when use this Beta firmware. ( if your router/switch supports creating multiple subnets) For example, if router & AP's IP addresses are on 192.168.0.0/24 subnet, set VLAN on a different subnet like 10.10.10.0/24.

Hello, thanks for reporting this issue to the community.
May I have the detailed network topology that how the modem/router/switch/APs are connected and how about their IP subnets?
What about other working modes like range extender mode or access point mode, will there be an issue?

@Solla-topee Hello,
I have simmilar problem with my brand new TL-WA1201. I'll try to describe it as detailed as I can.
Access Point is connected to my MikroTik router. So far I have 3 vlans (VLAN 100, VLAN 10, VLAN20). All of them are transported to AP over cable - 10 an 15 as tagged, 100 is untagged. I've tried configuration with 100 tagged too, but it change nothnig about package loss, it only make ap configuration page unaccessable.
I've played with it a little and rebuild whole config (router, ap) from scrach, step by step to see where is a problem. Everything was fine to the point, where I start assigning VLAN IDs on TL-WA1201 AP. Here's what it looked like:
-After initial configuration (setting a password and switching mode to Multi-SSID) I've configured 3 SSID (all stayed with VLAN 1, no change here at this point)
-- SSID 1 (2g+5g)
-- SSID 2 (2g+5g)
-- SSID 3 (2g only)
- Firewall rules on router was disabled to not interrupt during test
- I've connected a few devices over AP Wi-Fi (to all SSIDs), all of them get ip addresses from untagged VLAN100 and was able to ping 8.8.8.8 without any package loss. Also on router I start pinging TL-WA1201 - no package loss here too at this point.
- It was time to assign VLANs IDs, so first SSID get assigment to VLAN 10 -> after few seconds devices connected to this SSID get ip addresses dedicated for that virtual network, also I start to see a package loss on pings in that network
- Assigning ID for second VLAN make things wore, package loss almost 100% everywhere except router (pinging TL-WA1201). After stoping that job on router, devices from VLAN20 (connected via SSID 2) was able reach again ip 8.8.8.8 with some package loss, but devices from VLAN 10 (also only connected over Wi-Fi) still had gigantic package loss (~99%).
From my perspective, it looks like only packages from one VLAN can by transmited through the cable connection at the time. Simple pinging access point make all devices connected wirelessly unable to reach anything.
For the record - firmware on TL-WA1201 is in the newest version availbe on your website, also MikroTik packages are up to date.

@McMorn same problem here almost exactly as you describe.
Has anyone solved this? I bought this thing specifically to do multiple vlans and it seems it's useless

I have 2 TL-WA1201v2 (updated to the latest firmware) deployed in Multi-SSID mode with all 4 SSIDs setup, each with a separate VLAN tag (10,20,30 and 40).
One is connected to a Netgear GS116v2 switch. The specific port (where the AP is connected) is configured with VLAN IDs 1,10,20,30 and 40 to be untagged members on the switch, and he PVID is set to 1 (the default VLAN on the switch). I used this link as a starting point: https://netosec.com/home-network-vlans/
The second one is connected to a CISCO SLM2008 switch. The AP has an identical Multi-SSID setup. The approach on the switch port is more or less the same (interface is different on the SLM2008).
The two switches are daisy chained behind a mini PC running opnsense:
fiber modem -> opnsense -> gs116v2 -> slm2008
My experience so far is not consistent, it does depend on which of the two APs and which SSID I am connected (and how many devices are connected at the time).
The experience varies from brilliant to... "wanna-throw-my-laptop-out-the-window", and I do not even have all the wifi devices migrated across to these APs yet! (got some thermostats that only use 2.4GHz 802.11g)
I do feel that having a broad of mixture/combination of frequences, protocols and number of SSIDs, all enabled at the same time on the TL-WA1201v2 probably stretches the hardware beyond its usable capacity.

Hi,
experiencing the same problems.
One thing I noticed is that packet loss depends on the address that TL-WA1201 is assigned.
SSID 1 (2g+5g) - VLAN 20 - IP address 10.0.20.0/24
SSID 2 (2g+5g) - VLAN 30 - IP address 10.0.30.0/24
SSID 3 (2g+5g) - VLAN 40 - IP address 10.0.40.0/24
If I assign address from 10.0.10.0/24 subnet, all VLANs experience packet loss
If I assign address from 10.0.30.0/24 subnet, VLAN 30 packet loss is not as severe as on other VLANs
Problem occurred with single device in each VLAN.
Unfortunately I'm past the return period of my device, I think I'll try to RMA mine as device is unusable in it's current state.

Same situation here and I'm really mad. How can you sell this knowing that it doesn't do the things written on the damn box?

Anyone had any luck with getting this to work?
I'm in a similar situation in that I have 3 SSIDs/VLANs setup, 1 of the SSIDs/VLANs works flawlessly (the second in the list configured), but the other 2 are just constantly having issues, whether that's constantly pausing videos when playing or dropping connections completely. This sounds very similar to the issues Arteusz is having.
I'm on the latest 202000709 firmware.
Thanks, @NAH001
