My router is set to allocate IP to connected devices using DHCP in the range of addresses 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199 (as per default). This work fine.

I now wish to give my devices fixed IPs by using MAC / IP binding. This can be done by logging into the router web interface, Advanced, Security, IP and MAC binding. I can simply add items from the ARP List, to the Binding List. This works fine.

I now want to edit each item in the binding list, so that the IP address appear in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.99 . This can be done by going to the Modify column for each item, and clicking on the edit icon. This APPEARS to work fine, but doesn't!!
Each item appears to remain connected in DHCP range, and is not bound. It looks as if the Binding List is being ignored. Why is this happening?? Please help. Is this a software glitch??

In connection with this, I have a few other questions.

1) Why is the Binding List display limited to only 8 items per screen? Can we not have a "All" option so we can see it as a single list. This is in effect a web page, so length of page is unlimited, and I much prefer to scroll down and view the whole list.

2) Similarly, Why is the ARP List display limited to 5 items? Can we not have a "All" option so we can see it as a single list. This is in effect a web page, so length of page is unlimited, and I much prefer to scroll down and view the whole list.

3) The ARP list does not display device names. Why not? This would be most helpful. Strangely, looking at page 58 of the user manual, device names are visible!! (See image below). Device names are also visible on the DHCP client list (Advanced, Network, LAN settings).
(continued below image)

My device details are as below.

Whilst writing in this thread, I tried to "Add more information" for Model No, Hardware Version etc, in the pull down list above, but the Archer VR2800 is missing from the list.

Many thanks for your help in anticipation.

Many thanks,

Hi,

If you want to give your devices fixed IPs, you should use Address Reservation.

Thank you. I discovered that the other day when exploring the navigation bar on the left on the router config page. I found the following quote from the internet helpful:

"DHCP reservation ensures that a part MAC is always offered the same IP address, when it seeks. But that host can still use another IP address (static). Also, in case the “original” host is offline, any other machine can use the IP address. DHCP reservation is just a means to issue tha same IP to a MAC, “when it asks”. It is meant for convenience or ease of use where a given host is always offered the same IP.

IP to MAC binding is the other way round. It means that only a particular MAC will be returned for that specific IP. So a packet destined to that specific IP will always be sent to the designated host with that MAC. So, IP to MAC binding is more of a security feature to prevent against ARP attacks and spoofing."
