Why should I put my Deco in Access Point mode? What are the cons? I have main ISP in router mode ?
I already have a router given by my isp which can not be changed to Bridge Mode but I want to use the Router settings for Deco x20 as well.
so I want to know, what are the cons of putting Deco x20 in Router mode and also having main router of ISP in router mode as well.
I want to use Router setting of Deco x20 like QOS, DHCP, Device Isolation, Homeshield features and main setting that are unavailable under Access Point mode of Deco x20.
thanks

Hello, 🫡
To begin with, I wouldn’t recommend going with the Deco X20 in router mode because this issue is known as double NAT.
Cons: There are quite a few, and I'll list some for you:
- Issues with online gaming and P2P applications: A double NAT can cause latency and make it difficult to connect to game servers or other players. Additionally, it may limit access to features like voice chat and party chat on consoles, such as on the PS5..
- Reduced network performance: Since there are two devices translating IP addresses, latency and response times may be affected.
- Connectivity problems with smart devices and IoT: In networks with multiple smart devices, these devices might struggle to connect properly to the internet or to each other, especially if they need to communicate over the internet.
- Difficulty with port forwarding: If you want to set up port forwarding for a device on your network, double NAT complicates the process because you’ll need to configure it on both NAT devices.
- Challenges with external services access: In some cases, VPN services or remote access applications may not work correctly or may require additional configuration.
You probably don’t want this, so most ISPs offer an ONT in bridge mode upon request, which essentially only “translates/convert” the signal from the fiber optic cable, allowing you to use your own networking equipment to avoid the issues mentioned above.
If your ISP only allows their equipment, you can still use the Deco system in access point mode… unfortunately. You can definitely try setting them in router mode, but from there, you’ll see the results yourself 😅.
