Preferred WiFi Uplink AP feature
Preferred WiFi Uplink AP feature
I’m looking for comments on the Preferred WiFi Uplink AP feature in the latest AX55 beta firmware. My present EasyMesh network has 2 RE700X range extenders and one of them is physically located between the main router (an AX55) and another wired access point (also an AX55). I would like to configure the Preferred WiFi Uplink AP option for this RE700X to select the desired router but the only available option is “auto”.
On the forum website (https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/636954), it states “Preferred WiFi Uplink AP: by default, it is set to Auto, when there are more than two mesh nodes in the same EasyMesh network and wireless backhaul is used, you could select a preferred AP for the satellite device, the preferred AP can be either the main router or another satellite device.”
As I only have 2 mesh nodes (RE700X) that use wireless backhaul, it appears I need another RE700X. Is there anyone using more than 2 extenders that can confirm that I indeed would have the option to select the desired AP if I purchase another RE700X? I have no problem in acquiring another extender but before doing so, I would like to know the answer to my question.
Thanks in advance.

"... when there are more than two mesh nodes in the same EasyMesh network and wireless backhaul is used, you could select a preferred AP for the satellite device ..."
Then you stated "As I only have 2 mesh nodes (RE700X) that use wireless backhaul ..."
My understanding is that you have 3 mesh nodes connected wirelessly - AX55 (counting the main router) and 2x RE700X, so this option should be available to choose.
Anyway this has to be confirmed by TP-Link folks after the Spring Festival.

Perhaps you're right if the AX55 AP is counted. The main router (at present) has its WiFi disabled due to a possible loop problem and the distant AP is acting as the "main router" for EasyMesh. The two RE700X extenders show up on the AP web interface OK but I'm thinking the AP doesn't count itself which would explain why I only have the "auto" option for each extender.

It sounds like you could test that if you enable the Wi-Fi on your main AX55 just for the test.

I do remember now that when the main router had its WiFi and EasyMesh enabled, I did not have the option of node selection for the extenders. Then a loop problem appeared and I had to disable the EasyMesh on the main router. It's now been running like that for some 30 days with no problems and I prefer to leave it alone and wait for the next firmware release.
I'm hoping that perhaps someone has 3 (or more) extenders and can confirm the node selection option is indeed available.
Update 16-02-24:
I just received another RE700X and added it to the network. The option to select a preferred uplink is still not available. To further test this issue, I added an additional AX55 satellite (wirelessly) to the network. There still is no option even with 3 routers and 3 extenders in the network. It would appear that this uplink selection feature is not fully implemented.

Hi, currently only the AX55 V1 latest beta firmware supports the Preferred WiFi Uplink AP feature, that is why you cannot see it on RE700X, but since you have three AX55 V1 routers now, you could try testing it on one AX55 satellite router via WiFi backhaul.

With three routers and three extenders in the network, the "auto" option is the only one available. The option appears in the AX55 GUI for the satellite device as shown below:
I am not trying to set this option via the RE700X GUI as this option only appears in the AX55 GUI. What would be helpful would be some documentation on this feature with some examples so that we users could understand it more.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the feedback.
The name in your screenshot shows RE700x, so I guess you are trying to edit the RE700x satellite device on the main AX55 web interface, but RE700X doesn't support this feature, please edit another AX55 satellite device on the main AX55 web interface and check if you will have other option except for the auto.

You are correct in that I am trying to edit the RE700X in the GUI of the main AX55 router. Unfortunately, when editing a satellite AX55 in the main router's GUI, the option is not even shown. It only appears for the extenders.

Are you using wireless backhaul or ethernet backhaul on the satellite AX55 that you were trying to edit?
Please test wireless backhaul since this Preferred WiFi Uplink AP feature is for WiFi connection

Due to recent problems with EasyMesh, I now have EasyMesh disabled on all devices. If my memory serves me correctly, I had one satellite AX55 configured for ethernet backhaul and one satellite AX55 configured for wireless backhaul. I never saw the option to select a node. I will test this the next time I enable EasyMesh.
For me, what is important is having the ability to select an AP for the extenders but you have stated that the RE700X does not support this feature. For now, I am out of luck until a future firmware upgrade for the RE700X might include this feature.
