Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.6.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 181112 Rel.65058n

Hi, I'm having a problem with my TL-MR400 router, my internet keeps slowing down after using the internet for a few hours till I can no longer browse, the internet speed starts to crawl and restarting the router fixes the problem. It is getting really annoying.

The router starts with a good 3 network bars but after using the internet for a few hours, the network drops to 2 bars and then the internet starts to slow down till I can no longer browse, it can happen under a few minutes (30+ min) or an hour, the network then drops to 1 bar while on my phone the network is full, the network bars never goes back up to 3 bars when this happens and restarting the router returns the network to 3 bars

At first I thought it was my ISP having problems, I couldn't access the internet on my router so I waited for a day thinking my ISP would fix the problem, next day I checked on my phone and it was working perfectly fine there but on my router it can hardly open any pages, both SIM cards are from the same mobile operators.

I had not experienced any disconnection issue on my MR400 which many others are experiencing on their 4G routers but the internet slow down is starting to piss me off. I have to restart several times a day just to be able to use the internet and to be honest, I'm starting to regret buying the router.

I had resetted my router several times, and have updated the firmware to the latest version and still experiencing the problem.

I have checked the system log and I don't see any errors there.

Model: TP-Link Archer MR400 AC1350 Wireless

Hardware Version: V1

Firmware Version Tested:

Default - 1.5.0.0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 180720 Rel.63339n

Latest - 1.6.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 181112 Rel.65058n

UPDATE: I just figured the internet speed slow down is related to what @MikeMynis posted here for a different model 4G Router

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/167606?replyId=415228

Turning off, restarting, disconnecting router from the power adaptor and Factory Resetting the Router doesn't work.

I have to replace the SIM with another SIM to return the internet speed to normal but the problem still comes back after long hours or after a day of usage.

@Creeper

Thanks for your information.

May I know what is the SIM card carrier? With another SIM card inserted into the MR400, does it work well?

What about the wired connection? Do you still access internet via ethernet connection when failed to browse via wifi connection?

What is the led status of the MR400 when this issue happens? Please login to the web UI of the MR400 and show us a screenshot of the Basic-network map page and status page when the MR400 stops working.

Besides, you can try to create the network profile manually with the APN information.

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1663/

You can change the network type to 4G only to give it a go as well.

@Kevin_Z

My SIM card carrier is Airtel India with Unlimited 4G data.

I have a second SIM card from the same carrier but with a limited 4G data and swapping between the two sim cards restores the internet speed to normal as @MikeMynis mentioned in his post here.

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/167606?replyId=415228

I'm only using a wired connection on my Computer and has not connected anything to the router using a Wifi connection.

The LED status are all normal except the network bars drops to 2 network bars and if it doesn't go back to 3 network bars in a few seconds or minutes then I know that the problem is going to start. The internet speed starts decreasing slowly (not instant, can happen under a minute, 5 or 10 minutes) till It is difficult to open any more webpages. It will take long time to open any pages and the pages doesn't load all the elements.

As for the web UI of MR400, I do not have the screenshot right now but I had previously checked the web UI when it happened and every thing was normal there. I will upload the screenshot when the problem happens again.

I had also tried creating the profile manually with different authentication types PAP & CHAP but the problem still persists.

I had only been using the 4G only mode and it still happens.

UPDATE 1: so yesterday, I updated my router's firmware to the latest version from

Default - 1.5.0.0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 180720 Rel.63339n to

Latest - 1.6.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 181112 Rel.65058n

and it only made it worse, the network bars keep dropping to 2 and 1 network bar within a few minutes after a restart and my internet speed would start to crawl, I thought my router is done, no amount of factory reset through the web UI or the reset button on the router seem to fix the problem or swapping the sim cards or changing the settings, I then remember doing a firmware update yesterday so I reverted the firmware to the default 1.5.0.0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 180720 Rel.63339n and the internet speed is back to normal and the network bars has been stable on 3 network bars randomly dropping to 2 network bars but the speed has been stable so far, I will keep the post updated.

UPDATE 2: I just had my first disconnection problem after restoring to the default firmware which I downloaded from TP-Link Website, 1.5.0.0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 180720 Rel.63339n, before upgrading to the latest version 1.6.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 181112 Rel.65058n, I did not had any disconnection problem on 1.5.0.0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 180720 Rel.63339n which came with the router when I purchased it, but only my internet slows down which can be fixed by replacing the SIM card with another one. I have noticed that the network bar starts to drop from 3 to 2 bars when this problem is going to happen and never goes back up to 3 network bars. The internet got disconnected but it auto reconnected after 4 or 5 minutes but I cannot browse anything because the internet became too slow and restarting the router fixed the problem. I have attached the screenshot below

UPDATE 3: after restoring to the default firmware to 1.5.0.0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 180720 Rel.63339n (which I downloaded from tp link website) from 1.6.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 181112 Rel.65058n I'm getting all sorts of errors in the systems logs. It says type 3G eventhough I set it to 4G only Mode. I have also attached new screenshots.

The diagnostic tools reports the everything is passed.

But this is what happens when I open any pages, the internet speed starts to crawl and takes very long time to open pages and looks like the one on the screenshot below without loading all the elements.

And I can finally confirm that if the network bars drops to 2 bars and does not goes back up to 3 network bars in a few second (fluctuates) and stays at 2 network bar then I know the problem is going to start, the network bar mostly stays at 2 bars when this happens and it randomly switches between 2 and 1 network bar. The problem keeps happening every few hours and restarting the router is the only way to fix it.

I have posted the system log below and marked them with red color when the internet slow down happened and the network bars dropping to 2 bars.

When can we expect a fix please because at this state it is unusable and starting to get really annoying.

I'm already starting to look at alternatives because of 2 reasons. Unless a fix is expected soon because I really like this router.

1. All the 4G routers seems to be plagued by the same disconnection issues from what I have seen in the forum and hasn't been fixed since last year.

2. No LTE Band Lock / Selection (when other brands like Huawei, Asus, etc has this feature), which causes unstable connection when it automatically switches between different bands and causes a reduction in internet speed and can cause a ping spike when gaming unless you use the router for browsing the internet only.

For now I only want my internet speed and disconnection problem fixed which should be the main priority, the LTE Band Lock / Selection can come later. Thanks!

Hi @Kevin_Z,

I would like to help in any way I can, I got a notification email from TP-Link support that an engineer will follow up on my case and do further analysis to figure it out and to wait for a while.

I'm currently testing the 3G only mode and see if it has any disconnection problem and report back. Thank you!
