Hi everyone,

Because my laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ARE05) does not have a ethernet connection, I recently bought a TP-Link UE306 USB (3.0) Ethernet adapter. However, this does not work properly on my laptop, whereas it does work on other laptops around in the house, so the network or the adapter itself should not be the issue. Whenever I plug it in my laptop, it starts trying to switch from WiFi to Ethernet, but it 'kicks out' the adapter after a couple of seconds and switches back to WiFi again. The white light on the device starts flickering, but goes out after a couple of seconds when I plug it in. In the meantime, my internet connection is gone for a couple of seconds. If I keep the adapter in, it will start trying to establish an Ethernet connection every now and then (the white light starts flickering), but it doesn't succeed in doing so. Only when I plug it in and out a lot of times, it sometimes will work, so then I have a stable connection, but in most cases, I do not manage to get proper internet via Ethernet. I have tried everything I could find on the internet (updating drivers, reinstalling drivers manually, managing the USB power management setting, going into the BIOS, etc.) but nothing works. Could anyone help me out! It would help a lot! Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Willem Mu

Hi, welcome to our community.

Here are some additional suggestions for your reference:

1. Check USB Ports

  • Try Different Ports: Test the adapter in all available USB ports. Sometimes, certain ports may have issues or provide insufficient power.
  • USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0: If you're using a USB 3.0 port, try switching to a USB 2.0 port, as compatibility issues can arise.

2. Update BIOS

  • Check if there's a BIOS update available for your laptop. An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause issues with hardware compatibility.

3. Network Settings

  • Network Reset: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset. This will reset all network adapters and settings.
  • Remove Conflicting Network Adapters: If you have any other virtual network adapters (like those from VPN software), consider disabling or uninstalling them temporarily.

4. Driver Installation

  • Uninstall and Reinstall Drivers: Completely uninstall the adapter drivers from Device Manager and then reinstall the latest drivers from the official website.
  • Use Generic Drivers: Sometimes, using Windows' built-in drivers can resolve the issue. Uninstall the TP-Link drivers and allow Windows to automatically install drivers upon reconnection.

5. Disable Wi-Fi Temporarily

  • To ensure that the laptop doesn’t switch back to Wi-Fi, temporarily disable Wi-Fi in the settings when you connect the Ethernet adapter. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi and toggle it off.

6. Check Power Management Settings Again

  • Go back to Device Manager, right-click your USB Root Hub (under Universal Serial Bus controllers), select Properties, and then the Power Management tab. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

7. Check for Windows Updates

  • Ensure your Windows 11 is fully updated, as updates may resolve compatibility issues.

8. Testing on Another Device

  • Since the adapter works on other laptops, ensure that your laptop's USB ports and settings are functioning correctly. If possible, test another USB device to ensure the ports are operational.

Thank you and best regards.

Dear Marvin_S,

Thank you for your reply. I have (or had) already tried all the suggestions you came up with, but unfortunately, nothing has worked so far to resolve the problem completely. The network adapter is working, but I need to plug it in and out a couple of times before I get a stable connection, which is not very convenient. The USB ports of my laptops work fine, because I do not have any issues with other USB devices. Do you have any further suggestions to resolve this issue? I hope you can help me further and I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

Willem

Hi, thanks for your update.

If UE306 shows the same problem when it is connected to another computer or laptop, you may contact retailer or local support to confirm warranty.

Best regards.
