Hello, aware of issue with guest mode not allowing custom DNS hosted on the LAN due to client isolation. I have seen that client isolation fails on the guest network when an unmanaged switch is involved which doesn't pass the vlan tag. Therefore is it possible to connect the pihole device directly to the router or a switch while having the decos on AP mode? Has anyone tried this? I don't currently have ethernet on my pi so wanted to see if it's been done before purchasing an adapter.

Hi, welcome to the community.

When Deco is in AP mode, it doesn't support VLAN tags anymore. There is an individual toggle "Allow local access", when it is on, all the devices( from the main or guest network) can access the DNS servers hosted on the Pihole.

When it is off, the guest devices are separated from the main network by Access Control(there is a preset routing rule that allows guest devices only be able to access the LAN gateway in order to obtain IP addresses). So the guest devices can't access the customized Pihole DNS server.

Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi David thanks. I understand there is an outstanding request to route DNS traffic locally on guest network which doesn't have any further updates from tplink. Therefore this is to see if there is a work around.

At the moment if I use the deco in router mode (bridge mode enabled on isp router), I can connect a device to the isp router and successfully ping it from the deco guest network. The isp router and deco unit are using two different subnets but can talk between them even when guest mode is blocking access to local traffic on the deco. I have not put the pihole on the isp router yet but initial tests show this will probably work.
