Model: Deco X90
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.5

Hello,

I recently set up a Deco network and have some questions about its functionality and configuration. I appreciate any help you can provide.

My network consists of 3 Deco X20s and 4 Deco X90s, with one of the X90s acting as the main controller. All devices are operating as access points (APs) and utilize Ethernet cables for backhaul connections.

1. I have been using the TP-Link Deco app to manage the network. However, since adding the X90 as the main controller, I've been unable to access my network through the mobile app when not connected to my Wi-Fi. Previously, when I only had the X20s or before a certain update, I could access the network remotely over the internet. Is this normal behavior or should I be concerned?

2. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any other configuration options beyond those available through the web interface (main Deco web page) and the mobile app.

3. Regarding network traffic, do all data pass through the main Deco device, or is it routed directly to the router using the backhaul? In other words, does CPU of the main's Deco  handle the majority of the load?

4. When connecting Ethernet cables for backhaul, which RJ-45 port should I use on the Deco devices? Can I use any of the two ports available?

5. Lastly, is there a way to maintain internet access in the event the main Deco controller goes offline?

I greatly appreciate any assistance and answers to my questions. Thank you in advance.

My answers to your questions:

1. Adding X90 as Main Deco should not have changed how you can manage your Deco mesh. I wonder if you started to use VPN with your cellular service, or something else changed with your cellular service.

2. There are no other configuration options available. If TP-Link releases firmware with new features for your Deco models, configuration settings for these features will appear in Deco app. Until then, what you see in Deco app is what you get.

3. In Access Point mode, traffic from Satellite Deco wired to the ISP Router (not through Main Deco) will go directly to the router. That traffic will not pass through Main Deco.

4. You can use any Ethernet port for backhaul.

5.  In Access Point mode, if you have Satellite Deco wired to the ISP Router, one of them will automatically take the role of Main Deco when Main Deco goes down. It is quite nice resiliency built into Deco mesh. When Main Deco goes down you will see LED on remaining Satellite Decos change color to red, in Deco app you'll have an alert that Main Deco is down and recommendation to choose another Deco as Main Deco. Same time, Internet access will stay uninterrupted.

Just test that yourself: power off Main Deco and check if mobile devices connected to Deco SSID still have Internet access. They should, as long as there are Satellite Deco which are wired to ISP Router.

@Alexandre. Thank you for your response. I'm not quite sure what caused the app to lose external access to the network control after making changes. I will look into it.

My issue with the remote connection to control my Decos using Deco app was fixed after Deco x90 was updated to the ver. 1.1.6.
