Model: RE700X
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.9

I've recently upgraded from a RE550 to the RE700x.

I've set this up in access point mode, just like the RE550 was. All settings the same as the RE550 too.

I also updated the Firmware to the latest version available on the UK Website - RE700X(UK)_V1_1.0.9 Build 20221108

I've noticed that the battery drain on my mobile phone when connected to the RE700x seems to be an issue.

I've used the same phone to connect to my main Router (This is WiFi6 enabled to) on the 5Ghz channel and the battery drain when connected to the router is fine.

As soon as i connect the phone to the RE700x (5Ghz) the battery on the phone drains a lot quicker.

  • Is this a known issue with the product or the latest firmware?
  • Should i try and downgrade the firmware to the original version (RE700X(EU)_V1_1.0.3 Build 20220429)

I'm currently at a lost as what to do, it might be that i just return the RE700x and carry on using the RE550.

So I've done a little more testing.

Updated to the latest firmware then factory reset, that brought back the 160mhz channel, not sure why it what caused it to disappear during the FW upgrade.

Used the RE550 and left phone connected overnight, 6% drop in battery.

Following night, used the RE700X, 11% drop in battery

Something is off/wrong with the RE700X

  @Jbennett360

Hi, As for the Battery drain, I think it is similar to an old question" Does 4G/LTE Use More Battery Power Than 3G?", RE700X is quite like an advanced "4G" Technology than RE550. It supports WiFi 6, easy mesh, and 160mhz which RE550 does not.

So if you tend to save power usage on the smartphone when connecting to RE700X, you could put it into Airplane mode or turn off unnecessary apps running in the background.

As for the 160mhz, I see you mentioned that "Updated to the latest firmware then factory reset, which brought back the 160mhz channel, not sure why what caused it to disappear during the FW upgrade."

Do you mean, after downgrading back to 1.0.3 or 1.0.6, you could get 160mhz on the RE700X, but after updating to 1.0.9, RE700x no longer has 160mhz?

How do you test the 160mhz, via wireless link speed or something else? Can you share some pictures with me?

Thank you very much.

Wait for your reply.

  @David-TP

Like I mentioned in the first post. I've used/tested my phone on my main router (Asus AX86S) which is also WiFi6 etc, and battery drain on that is similar to the RE550.

It's only the RE700X that seems to be causing excessive drain. (14% in 7.5 hours overnight).

There's only 2 firmware's for the UK version. The one that shipped (1.0.3) and the latest (1.0.9).

Updating from the factory shipped firmware to the latest firmware (1.0.9), 160mhz wasn't visible in the settings in the dropdown.

I then did a factory reset to restore all settings to default state, after doing this, 160mhz was then selectable in the dropdown.

I've also noticed random WiFi disconnections too. It basically disconnects and reconnects almost instantly.

As much as I want to like this device, there's obviously major issues with it.

I'll look at returning this to the retailer.
