Model: Archer VR400
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.4.0 0.9.1 v00a1.0 Build 210917 Rel.50331n

I want to forward SSH on the default port of 22 to the VR400's external address on the same port (22).

  • I can connect to SSH on the local network.
  • I have defined a reservation for the SSH host's IP.
  • I have defined a virtual server.

I have rebooted the router.

It doesn't work. Attempting to connect to SSH via the external address fails with a connection timeout. Is there some step I have omitted?

Make sure that you're connected to an external network (for example a mobile network) when testing this.

Also make sure that your internet IP address is the same as your external IP address on the VR400 status page:

After receiving a response suggesting that testing be done using a host on an external network I re-tested with the same results.

The external address shown by the modem is, as expected, the static IP address for which I pay.

Make sure that your external IP address is not in this range 100.64.0.0 to 100.127.255.255 (If it is then you're behind CG-NAT).

Also make sure that you have active service that is listening on TCP port 22 on the host with IP address 192.168.1.114.

If you don't have active service on that host:port then you got nothing to forward to.

@terziyski thank you for your help.

To those who follow: when using a mobile hotspot to connect from outside your network, you must ensure that the mobile hotspot is the preferred route. The simplest reliable way to do this is to disable other interfaces.

Now that I know this routing issue exists I'll have a look at altering the routing table to use a different gateway for the external address, or something like that.
