Do TP-Link routers (still) send DNS queries to Avira even when HomeShield is disabled?

Hello,

as reported in the media a few weeks ago, some TP-Link routers have sent an increased number of DNS queries to Avira servers.

Then there were firmware updates which reduced the requests.

However, I would be interested to know whether (as observed before the updates) DNS inquiries continue sent to Avira even when HomeShield is completely disabled?

Unfortunately, there was nothing to read about this behavior in the firmware releases.

Thanks and greetings,
Martin

Hello Martin, can I know the model of your TP-Link router? You can visit this FAQ to check and update the router firmware to the latest version.

TP-Link HomeShield utilizes Avira services. As a result, HomeShield routers routinely obtain Avira's IP address by launching requests to Avira subdomains. If you don't use HomeShield features like Parental Control, QoS, or Antirivus, or in other words, if HomeShield is off, then it won't send DNS inquiries to Avira.

  @Kevin_Z

First of all thank you for your answer!

Sure? So this has been changed as well?

So it wasn't just the number of inquiries that was reduced?

Because apparently before the updates DNS requests were sent to Avira even when HomeShield was disabled!

And this behavior would not be welcome at all!

Regards,

Martin

Hello Martin, thank you very much for the follow-up.

Yes, we are sure that the router won't send DNS queries to Avira if you are not enabling or using any HomeShied features (HomeShied is disabled completely).

If you are observing something abnormal, please be sure your TP-Link router is running the latest official firmware first, and provide more details then we can work with the engineers to figure it out.
