Model: Archer T3U
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1030.29.618.2019

I am getting really low bandwidth speeds on my "TP-Link Archer T3U Plus AC1300", connected to my gaming PC. My speed as tested is usually between 60-80Mbps, and very rarely hits 90Mbps, where as pretty much all other laptops in my house (2 macbooks and 1 windows laptop) can consistently and easily hit 200Mbps+ (the internet is 250Mbps).

Eliminated possibilities:

- Not an ISP problem : My connection is a 250Mbps, and I have tested with my Macbook Pro (MBP 16") in pretty much the same spot as my Gaming PC. They both pretty much get speeds of 200mbps consistently.

- Connected to the 5Ghz network : I have forced a separate 5G SSID and ensured it's connected to the 5Ghz version (AC mode only)

-  Connected to USB 3.0 - it's plugged in to the USB 3.0 in the back of the system.

Basic configuration of the PC it's connected to:

- Windows 10, updated to latest version

- 7600K, 160GB RAM, GIGABYTE Z170-HD3 Motherboard

A screenshot of wifi-connection below:

Any suggestions on how i can improve the speeds? Or is this the best this adapter can do? It claims "867 Mbit / s on 5GHz" in the product page. Thanks in Advance!

@RonniE911 Hello,

Thank you for the detailed post. Here are some suggestions which you could give it a try:

Try a different USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port and see if that helps with the speed.

Change router's wireless channel width to 80Mhz  and try a different 5Ghz Wi-Fi of main router.

Here is a newer version chipset which you could give it a try: https://static.tp-link.com/beta/2021/202101/20210108/RTLWlanU_WindowsDriver_1030.41.0514.2020_Drv_3.00.0036(26078).zip

If the above does not help, may I know the model of router?

When put MacBook at the same location of the Windows computer, can you help check the Link speed on MAC, and kindly share photo of speedtest on MAC and windows as comparison,thank you.

Thanks @Solla-topee !

Here's the few things i did.

  • Changed Channel wdith to 80Hz, rebooted the WiFi Router
  • Installed the drivers you provided, rebooted the System
  • Tested with 4 different USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. Interestingly USB 2.0 ports seems to provide slightly better speeds - but not that different and could be purely concidental as i just tested 6 times.
  • Can't try with a new Router - i don't have a spare 5Ghz. But The router is also a TP-Link (Archer C6), and gives me good speeds on the macbook at same spot (as seen below). I have an old 2.4Ghz router (also a TP-Link), but i doubt that's a good option.

Changes:

  • Speeds have definitely improved - i was getting an average of 60-80 MBps before, now its consistently over 100 Mbps. But it still is significantly below what Macbook gives - well over 200Mbps.
  • The link speeds seems to be different between Windows and Mac. Windows shows a 585/585 with the adaptor, whereas Macbook shows a link speed of 867/867. Is there anyway i can force a 867/867 link speed on WIndows?

Screenshots of both tests attached (tests done in same room - pretty much the same spot)

from PC/with T3U Plus

config of PC: 7600K, 16GB RAM, GIGABYTE Z170-HD3 Motherboard, RX570 8GB & Crucial P5 SSD as systemdisk

from Macbook Pro with internal WiFi:

config of Mac: MBP 16" - 2020 model, i7

thanks for your help!

@RonniE911 Hello,

Thanks so much for sharing all the detailed info,  if speed does not reach to 866, you could shorter the  the distance between Windows and router , and try to turn off smart connect on router and try Chanel width 80Mhz. (that helps to isolate the issue)

At the same time, we would like to have a specialist look into this further via email. Please check your mailbox later, and let us know if the issue is resolved. Thank you!
