Model: TL-WR841N
Hardware Version: V14
Firmware Version: 0.9.1 4.17 v0001.0 Build 200903 Rel.58674n

Hello. Networking newbie here although I am from a UNIX and high availability background. I have my TL-WR841N set up in range extender mode and it is working fine. The primary router is from NowTV (Sky) and I have connected via WiFi and a wired ethernet connection over a TP-Link Powerline AV1000 connection. How can I make sure the traffic between the routers is over the fast wired connection rather than the slower WiFi?

All sorted now. I have the router in access point mode plugged in to the powerline adapter and the other end is connected to the NowTV router. I know I am getting the wired speed and the main desktop is returning 70+ Mbps on speed tests.

Thanks to all who helped, Kudos to follow :-)

Just want to confirm, how did this WR841N connect to the primary router from NowTV (Sky), via the AV1000 powerline adapter? What is the model number of the AC1000?

Generally, if the WR841N is connected to the primary router via the powerline connection, the data and traffic will be transferred via the Ethernet/wired connection, it will not connect to the primary router via Wi-Fi, so no worries.

@Kevin_Z  Thank you. Yes, the WN841N and the NowTV hub  are connected over the Powerline adapters via a standard ethernet cable plugged into LAN ports. They are model TP-PA7017P. I also tried configuring the WN as a router and connecting the WAN port. This worked fine but as the LAN and WAN had to be on different subnets I had comms issues and, as I said, I am not a networking expert :-( The only thing I should add is that the roomes they are in are on different ring mains and I do know that the speed will be impacted by that.

I have got round it for now by using a little 5 port switch I had which has fixed all the comms and speed issues but doesn't have wireless of course. I would lik eto put the router back but for now it is not desperate.

Thanks again

Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for getting back. If you want to make all the devices in the network communicate each other, you can change the WR841N into access point mode as this, then connect its LAN port to one of the TP-PA7017P unit (the other should be connected to the NowTV (Sky) router). You can either connect to the wireless of the NowTV router or to the WR841N, both should work.

Just try this at your convenience. Good day.
