Model: Archer AX1800
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.0 Build 20200929 rel.54838(4555)

Hi everyone,

I am using the not so cheap AX1800 for 5 days now and I am noticing that it looses the connection to the internet daily (or twice per day).

Sometimes resetting it is enough. Other times it needs to be unplugged from the power supply.

Initially I thought it is just a random event but it happens at least daily, for 5 days now...

Could you please offer an advice? Some troubleshooting sugestions?

Please find below the log for today:

Event#1:
============

I woke up in the morning without connection to the network.
All devices (2 mobile phones and 1 tablet) were connected succesfully to the network the night before - now none of them was connected to the network.
I used Router's Reset button and connection succeeded from the first try:

Still no internet connection up to this point after multiple failed "pppoe send PADT".
At this point I unpluged Router from power supply:

Still failures to connect to the internet!!.

A lot of pppoe send but no receive.

At this point I:
- unplugged it from power suply
- unplugged it from the internet (removed network cable)
- plugged it to the power supply
- waited for everything to come up
- plugged it to the internet => all ok:

Knowing that:

- my internet provider is RCS-RDS

- the LED for Internet is sometimes Green and sometimes Orange (altough everything looks fine from internet connection point of view)

My questions:

1. Why do I have have these so frequent disconnections?

2. Why resetting/unpluging is not enough sometimes? It requires a special ceremony involving network cables besides the power cable...

3. Any tuning necessary? MTU like?

4. Anything extra that I can activate as log level to understand (or to help you understand) what happens?

Thank you in advance !

@Ivaylo and all,

4 days ago I have changed:

1. The "MTU size" and raised it to 1492.

2. The "Detect online interval" and raised it to 22 seconds. Initially, this was set to 10 seconds.

And...no more disconnections.

I will monitor and see if this remains stable for the entire month.

@StinTheGreen

PADx messages are PPPoE Discovery messages, normal as the connection is built up or torn down, you should not see them normally, it is an indication of a connectivity or configuration issue.

PADI - PPPoE Active Discovery Initiation
PADO - PPPoE Active Discovery Offer
PADR - PPPoE Active Discovery Request
PADS - PPPoE Active Discovery Session-confirmation
PADT - PPPoE Active Discovery Termination

This is most likely a carrier issue between your router and ISP equipment`(including bad cabling), PADx messages are related to PPPoE Active Discovery protocol and if it happens repeatedly (usually) it means the PPPoE connection is bouncing up and down, again this is likely an issue between the router and the carrier's equipment so I would contact them.

@Ivaylo

Many thanks for your time. I appreciate the answer and thank you for the direction.

But I think the cause is different and not related to cabling. My reasoning:

1. The old router, Tenda, was using the same cable for years without any issues. No restarts, no disconnections.

2. A cabling issue persists and it is not solved by router restarts.

There must be something else with this new router.

New hardware, new software...a bug, configuration issue, tuning.

I was hoping to understand and solve the issue, otherwise I am starting to consider returning it to the vendor and using my previous router.

@StinTheGreen

Like I mentioned, it may be a configuration issue as well. Be sure that in Advanced Settings of PPPoE settings you have:

If the issue persists you can experiment with this setting as well:

and of course the MTU size, but one at a time, to be able to determine the root cause.

But again, the primary point of contact for resolving this should be your ISP, so you can tweak together these settings and see what's causing the issue.

@Ivaylo

Thank you very much.

The connection mode is already set to Auto.

I will wait for the next occurence before playing with the other parameter you suggested and will provide updates.

Perhaps one other question meanwhile:

Considering the large number of "pppoe send PADI/PADT" without reply what is the standard cause:

1. Requests not actually sent?

2. Request received on provider side but ignored (some black list related to number of requests?)

3. Response received but ignored by the router?

Thanks!

TBH it would be a guessing from my side, but I would bet on - too many connect requests send from the router to the provider side (PADI). Immediately after PADI, router sends to provider side termination (PADT) due to re-sending PADI.

It may be quicker to resolve this issue with your ISP (if they already have such cases in their network - they would advise you). I would bet that you are not the only client with AX1800 in their network.

Re:My new Archer AX1800 won't stay connected to the internet

@StinTheGreen Hello. I have exactly the same router and firmware. I just set my MTU to 1480. I used this article to get to this number How to find the proper MTU size for my network | TP-Link. I don't have a choice of setting the Detection of Online Interval, because on Static IP this option seems not to be available. I'm not sure if it really helped, random spikes in latency seems to be gone (for now), but instability still takes place when for instance downloading from Steam and calling on Discord at the same time - the latency quickly goes up to 2000ms. This was not happening with the old router - the old one was even slower, even not having 5Ghz wifi. Can I ask you if you managed to fix the issue in other way than setting the MTU ?

the PPP logs are empty, but for some reason when this issue occurs Led controller always reports something like:

@RobTheAnimoo

Hi, no other actions on my side. In my specific case the issue was solved only via the 2 settings/changes that I mentioned above.

May I know who is your ISP? Do you mean the WAN connection type on the AX1800 is static IP? Is this required by the ISP? Will you be able to get a stable connection by connecting the ISP modem to the computer directly bypassing the AX1800 with that static IP? Please do test this, and ensure that is stable.

@Kevin_Z My ISP requires setting the static IP in router. The connection is stable when disconnecting router and connecting directly to PoE adapter (provided by ISP - it powers a modem on the roof, I don't have access to the modem that is an ISP's property and shared for several people in flat house - I have no idea if the term 'Flat house' is correct but I'm sure you know what I'm trying to say). I live in Czechia and its a local provider.
