Questions about Deco E4
Hi,
I need to buy a Deco and have couple of questions that are essential before I can understand which one to buy - primarily focoussing on E4 and M4 -
- Once the primary Deco is connected via the Ethernet cable to the router, and a Deco network is created, can I then remove the ethernet cable? Or does it needs to stay connected
- The E4 says LAN port has a speed or 10/100Mbps, but I have an internet connection of 200Mbps. Will E4 be, thus the right choice if we have to connect it to the router with Ethernet cable?
- The E4 spec also says that its capable of signal rate of 867 Mbps at 5 GHz, 300 Mbps at 2.4 GHz. Pardon my ignorance and lack of knowledge, but does speed spec does not contradict point (2) above, where its limited to 100Mbps? Or is it that this signal rate is the speed of the Wifi n/w created by the Deco?
Would really appreciate if I can get some pointers about it.
Thanks

Hello, sorry that we didn't respond to this thread timely.
I will answer your inquiries one by one as below:
1. Once the primary Deco is connected via the Ethernet cable to the router, and a Deco network is created, can I then remove the ethernet cable? Or does it needs to stay connected
TP-Link_Deco: Yes, the main Deco needs to be connected to the modem/router/internet source all the time with the Ethernet cable.
2. The E4 says LAN port has a speed or 10/100Mbps, but I have an internet connection of 200Mbps. Will E4 be, thus the right choice if we have to connect it to the router with Ethernet cable?
TP-Link_Deco: It is not suggested to purchase E4 if your internet bandwidth is higher than 100Mbps, as it will be limited to 100Mbps due to the 10/100Mbps Ethernet connection.
3. The E4 spec also says that its capable of signal rate of 867 Mbps at 5 GHz, 300 Mbps at 2.4 GHz. Pardon my ignorance and lack of knowledge, but does speed spec does not contradict point (2) above, where its limited to 100Mbps? Or is it that this signal rate is the speed of the Wifi n/w created by the Deco?
TP-Link_Deco: 10/100Mbps for the Ethernet or the 867Mbps for 5GHz or 300Mbps for 2.4GHz is the link speed between the devices connected to each other. For example, if your wireless adapter is a 2*2 MIMO dual-band one, you will get 300Mbps link speed at most when connected to the 2.4GHz and get 867Mbps at most when connected to 5GHz. While there is a significant difference between the theoretical wireless rate and actual wireless rate, refer to the below for more details:

With the 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports, the wired link speed can be 100Mbps at most, so it is not suggested to get the E4 if you have a higher bandwidth more than 100Mbps. You may wonder what is the point to get 867Mbps for 5GHz or 300Mbps for 2.4GHz if the LAN speed is limited to 100Mbps, well, we have to say even the limited 100Mbps LAN speed, you can still get better actual speed with better wireless link speed.
Hopefully, that answers your question but let us know if you need more details.

Does this mean, If I already have an E4, I can purchase M4/M5 and use the M4/M5 as master and connect the E4 as slave (wirelessly), that way I can go upto 300 Mbps in both devices?

Hi, yes, you can add an M4/M5 in the same mesh network and set the M4/M5 as the main one, which is connected to the modem/router with an Ethernet cable, then you will be able to get the advertised 300M or 867M wireless link speed with a 2 MIMO wireless adapter.
Good days.

@spsp Just to ensure I get this right, I could connect a M4 to a 300Mbps router, and have an E4 as part of the mesh and get ~300Mbps on the E4 (accounting for distance etc.) and not be limited by the 100Mbps Ethernet limitation?
This limitation is hardly advertised on E4 - I learned this the hard way now.

I have setup M5 as my main router connected to modem with 300 MBPS speed, following my main router which is M5, I am using 3 E4 decos to form my mesh network. I get more than 200 MBPS speed when i connect my device (my phone) to main deco (M5). but at all my E4 decos I am getting roughly about 50-70 MBPS speed which is same as what i was getting when my main router was E4.
I am seeking advice from experts in this group if I am doing something wrong here. Because based on the discussion here and also as per my understanding in this setup at E4 deco I should be getting more than 100 MBPS speed, right? Need your help here if I am missing any critical configuration.

I have tried this and I am not seeing E4 Deco configured as slaves getting more than 100MBPS speed.
