Model: Archer VR600
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

Hi All

I have an Archer VR1600v Wireless Dual band modem / router that I want to operate as a "Modem" only, i.e. I want to disconnect / disable the router function.

Reason being I'm trying to set up a dual router home network, one using an exisitng Netgear Nighthawk X4S D7800 mdem router (which I have to convert to router only mode - any suggestions here would be welcome as well) and a second ASUS router that will have NordVPN client installed. The Netgear won't take an installation of the VPN client, hence the Asus is needed to cover hte devices I wnat covered via VPN.

The Asus router won't work with a combination modem router (so can't use teh Netgear) and has to be connected to a stand alone modem.

Any ideas thoughts on how to configure the Asus to the Archer so it works would also help, cheers

@Kevin_Z

I've managed to get the Archer VR1600v Modem/Router working as a Modem only connected to an NBN FTTN copper telephone line.

This is what I've done;-

1.        Changed the IPv4 address of the Archer VR1600v to 192.168.0.1 to make it different from my DrayTek Vigor 2926Vac Router with IPv4 address 192.168.1.1, which enables             me to access the Archer VR1600v web service through my DrayTek Vigor 2926Vac Router from my computer.

2.        Turned off DHCP and WiFi. as my DrayTek Vigor 2926Vac Router will provide both.

3.        Deleted all existing Internet connections on the Archer VR1600v and established a Bridge Internet connection.

4.        Plugged my DrayTek Vigor 2926Vac Router into LAN Port 1 on the Archer VR1600v.

5.        Configured my DrayTek Vigor 2926Vac Router to use the Archer VR1600v as a Modem.

I'm able to look at the Archer VR1600v Status and Log through its web service from my computer, with Time provided from my computer. Although I can change settings in the Archer VR1600v through my DrayTek Vigor 2926Vac Router from my computer, so far I have not found any need to do so.

For your information, the Archer VR1600v works as modem mode only by default. You can hard reset it by holding the reset button/hole for 10s with it powered on.

And then you can connect the main router to it by wired cable and switch it to regular router mode to configure it.

For the ASUS router, it is suggested to contact their tech support, we are not familiar with it.

Thanks for the prompt response, couple of questions though and please excuse what may seem as ignorance - I'm old and not a tech marvel. Is the connection from the Archer to the WAN port on the Netgear or a LAN port - I'm assuming WAN? I'm also assuming after connecting to the "regular router to configure it" you mean the current Netgear modem router. Lastly, as for talking to Asus support it seems they are as familiar with it as you are - doesn't really say a lot for them does it! Thanks again for your reply, cheers

@akranda

After resetting the TP-Link, connect it to the WAN port on the Netgear, then you can do the configuration on the Netgear router, no need to do any settings on the TP-Link.

Good day.

@Stella.Q Hi I've tried following this but am having no luck.

My ISP is TPG Australia. Currently trying to use my own router and have the TPLink vr1600v act as a modem only.

Hi all, I have the same question but in reverse.

I had to switch it for work and it was put on modem only mode. I'm with virgin WiFi

Its slowed down my Internet so bad and now I just want to switch back to my normal WiFi as it hasn't solved my problem. How do I switch it back so I can just use my virgin Internet? It won't even let me connect to my box now as in modem only mode.

@Pipm

Good day,

Thanks a lot for your time and patience.

Sorry for the delay.

In case there is any misunderstanding, could you please help me confirm the following:

Did you want to set up the Archer VR1600V to DSL bridge modem and use the Virgin router as the main wireless router?

Or set up the Archer VR1600V as the wireless DSL modem router?

If it is the first one, you could go to advanced> network> internet> choose bridge as the internet connection type, then set up the PPPoE username and password on the Virgin router;

While if it is the 2nd one, you could factory reset the modem and do the setup from beginning;

Thanks a lot.

What I want to do is to use my own router which will handle all of the connection configuration and use the Archer VR1600 solely as a modem. I need to use the Archer VR1600v as a modem because the NBN FTTN micro-node that I'm connected to uses the Broadcom bcm63168 DSL chipset as does the Archer VR1600v. The download connection speed is capable of reaching 60mbps enabling me to use my ISP's 50mbps plan. The ArcherVR1600v comes pre-configured by my ISP. Therefore a reset retains the original pre-configuration. I need to do two things. Firstly, I need to turn off the router function in the Archer VR1600v. Secondly, I need to connect my router to the correct port on the Archer VR1600v.

Question 1: How do I turn off the router function in the Archer VR1600v?

Question 2: Which port on the Archer VR1600v do I connect my router to?
