Wired connections limited to 100mbps on VR400
I bought an AC1200 (VR400), it's on the latest firmware, but I cannot get any wired Ethernet ports to go above 100mps. WiFi is working fine and go higher (PC connects on 2.4 GHz at 144mbps, phone is on 5ghz at 174mbps), but my PC, work PC, NAS, Games console etc are all limited to 100mbps even with a direct connection to the router and nothing else plugged into it.
I've tried 6 different cat5e cables and a cat6 cable.
3 Windows 10 laptops, set speed to auto and also tried forcing 1gbps.
Before this, I owned the AC750 and all the rest of the hardware was the same, that was getting 1gbps with no issues, leading me to believe it has to be something in the router.
Please can anyone assist?

3 *10/100Mbps RJ45 LAN Ports
1 *10/100/1000 RJ45 LAN/WAN Ports
For V3, it has
3× 10/100/1000Mbps RJ45 LAN Ports,
1× 10/100/1000Mbps RJ45 WAN/LAN Port,

Hi,
Please check the negotiation speed of the ethernet ports of VR400.
Note: Login to the web UI, go to basic-network map page-click VR400 icon and get the negotiation speed.
Besides, you can try to enable QoS without setting it up to give it a go.

The negotiation speed is 100mbps on all ports, I've enabled QoS but no change.
The link you've put is mainly for ISP speed, my issue is the internal LAN speed, copying files to my NAS etc

The negotiation speed is 100Mbps on all ports, and as you can see, 3 LAN ports are 100Mbps ports, only the LAN4/WAN port is 1000Mbps.

So the wired speed from the VR400's first 3 ports won't be higher than 100Mbps; While you can change another ethernet cable, like cat5e or above and connect your computer to the LAN4 port to test the speed.

Thanks Kevin, I hope this isn't true as the product pages online all say "gigabit ports" (plural) like here: https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/dsl-modem-router/archer-vr400/
And here it says there's 4 gigabit ports too:

This is what I went on when buying it, even the amazon page states (plural):
"To help your wired devices achieve peak performance, the router’s Gigabit Ethernet ports operate 10x faster than standard Ethernet"
A single gigabit port is pretty useless if everything else is running at a 100mbps bottleneck.

Hi Maff,
Sorry for that, as you can see the spec page, the LAN4/WAN port is 1000Mbps port, that is used for the EWAN function. ( which means the router works as a regular wireless router and connect to the internet source by ethernet cable, not DSL line).

Argh this is super annoying. Not to hijack the OP thread, but I was having the same issue as my gigabit LAN would only connect at 100mb link speed...except on the lan4/wan. Unfortunately my final setup is to run the tplink modem in bridge mode and as far as I can tell I cannot use lan4/wan port so I'm crippled to 100mb speed.l as I'm forced to use lan1, lan2 or lan3
Suggestion to buy an even more expensive modem router (vr900) just to be able to get 4 gigabit ports is kind of rubbing salt into the wound.
Tplink, is there any way to use the tplink's gigabit lan4/wan port whilst the device is in bridged mode? When I try to connect to my own router to lan4/wan, I don't get any WAN connection on my network (guessing because lan4/wan on the tplink isn't setup to work in that configuration when its in bridge mode?).

Hi MonzaBlue,
As you know, the LAN4/WAN port is the gigabit port, while the other 3 are all 100Mbps ones.
The LAN4/WAN port can work when it works in bridge mode, which means the VR400 is used to synchronize the DSL connection, with the DSL light solid on, you can connect your own router to the LAN4/WAN port and configure it with the configuration parameters given by ISP to make the other router work.

Thanks for the reply. I am on TP-Link vr400 V2 with the latest firmware available on the tplink support site. If I set the tplink to bridge mode and connect my router to lan1 I get 100mbit connectivity and internet on my lan devices.
If I then take that cable and swap it to the lan4/wan port on the tplink, i lose internet and no longer get a public IP from my internet provider. So, can you tell me why that doesn't work? Is there anything else that needs to be set on the tplink (is is anything to do with "operation mode"?). I would really appreciate a clear description of all the correct settings needed to use lan4/wan port when the vr400 is in bridge mode. Thanks

How did you set it up as bridge mode?
What I think is that the VR400 will be used to synchronize the DSL connection with DSL line ( phone line) plugged into the DSL port, then another gigabit router connects to the LAN4/WAN port to get the gigabit port.
Just like: DSL line---(DSL port) VR400 ( which is bridge mode by default)(LAN4/WAN port)---(WAN port) main router.
For the wireless router mode, that means the VR400 will connect to the internet source by ethernet cable and works as a regular wireless router.
Like: internet cable provided by ISP --(LAN4/WAN port) VR400, then it will affect the bandwidth you paid. While cause the other 3 LAN ports are still 100Mbps, the speed won't be higher than 100Mbps, while the wireless devices won't be limited in 100Mbps.

Hi, I'm with @Maff on this one... I recently bought this same router (although now outside of any refund window) because the box and all over the TP-LINK website it states how it has FOUR gigabit ethernet ports. If that is not true, that would need changing urgently. I've only recently discovered that I was not getting the 1 Gbit/s wired network as expected. What do I do as a consumer, considering being outside of the returns process window at the retailer I used, and being that it is TP-LINKs own misleading and misadvertised marketing, description and packaging that has caused this issue. As someone involved with trading standards in the UK, I am appauled.
How can I now resolve this issue without having to invest further in a new router which will perform as advertised?
