The latest firmware for the vr600 v1 is dated 25/08/16. Is there any hope of updating the firmware to include the capabilities present in the v2 firmware, such as the VPN server, etc?

no heard of that, but we can send to tp-link email support and ask for update

I emailed support, and they replied stating that there won't be updates to the v1 firmware to add the features found in the v2 firmware, sadly :(
