I recently purchased a AV200 Powerline Adapter Starter Kit.

I have been able to set it up and get connected through the relayed wifi set up.

My question is this.
When I am in the room with my cable modem I get up to 100Mb download speed, but when I go to my study and use the TP-Link I can only get between 10 - 30 Mb.
Are there any diagnostics I can do to see why this drop off happens or is it normal.

I needed to go to the powerline because there are a number of heavy brick walls between the study and the access point to the Cable Internet (BigPond Cable Extreme) and wi fi performance was awful.

While the current speed is better than I was getting, I'd love to push it up to close to the 100 if possible.

Thanks in advance.
(If this has been answered elsewhere, a link would be great)

So when speed is a concern, then why on earth did you purchase the slowest technology available today? Return the AV200 kit and get yourself a pair of AV1200 adapters.

Hi,
Thanks you for your extremely helpful and instructive feedback. I got the model number wrong I bought the AV500. But you're well thought response doesn't explain why a system capable of 200 Mbs currently doesn't meet even 100 Mbs.
I have done some more reading and I expect that the issues are related to our very old (~1970's) wiring.

I'm interested though in why anyone would think that a higher capacity link that is capable of 10 times the speed of my internet connection could possibly be better than one that is only twice (or in reality 5 times) the capacity.

If, for some reason my ignorance has upset you, accept my apologies, but really the mirror is the best place to start to reduce your intolerance.

Again, does anyone know what investigations I can take to test my wiring or points to see if I can improve the performance.

Stay well
Barry

The speed label tells you the theoretical maximum on a perfect and short line. Real life is going to end up below that, way below in a large house. And then, physical line speed does not equal payload throughput. Powerline is a shared media, inherently unidirectional network, so you can expect your payload throughput to be about a third to a half of physical media speed.

So in reality, AV500 kit will not be enough to pipe 100 Mbit/s of payload throughput (and now you also know why those "500 Mbit/s" adapters only have a 100 Mbit/s LAN jack). AV1200 kit will come close if your house wiring is providing a favorable environment.

I purchased a AV600 Powerline Starter kit to improve the speed to my Bedroom for my 4K TV to access Netflix 4K HDR. I have fibre broadband. The AV600 makes no difference whatsoever to the speed I am getting through the TV's built in WiFi. Very disappointing
