I saw lot of posts in internet about powerline connections however none that really explains why and how.

First of all check if your home is a one phase distribution or 3 phase distribution you can usually check that in the electrical bill.
1 - One phase distribution: In this case all the electrical circuit is in the same phase and the powerlines can be connected in any socket;
2 - 3 phase distribution: you need to connect the powerlines in the same phase. How the phases are distributed is a little tricky to check. One solution is to use the circuit breaker board (before this procedure disconnect electronic appliances from the socket). Go to each circuit break (one by one) and try to find out what sockets are connected to each circuit break. When you find two sockets in the same circuit breaker then they can be used. One note: there could be a differential circuit breaker do not touch this one since is only for person protection.

The best solution is to put the powerlines alone in a socket, then the electronic appliances should be connected using other sockets to the mains using RF/surge suppressors.

Check the power strip wire section (in Europe usually you have 1mm and 1,5 mm) use the 1,5 mm.

However, there are several situations where you don't have sockets available. In this case use this solution:
Power strip connect to the socket;
Powerline connected to this power strip;
Second power strip connected to the first one;
In this second power strip connect the appliances (if possible, the second power strip should have an RF or surge supressor, however ask to someone that understand surge protectors before buying one, in Europe at least check for the CE label)
