Wifi Less than Dial Up Speed on iPhone 6

I have the TP-LINK TD-W9980 N600 wifi router and have been relatively happy with it but now it's dog slow with my phone.
Firmware version:0.6.0 1.12 v0021.0 Build 150507 Rel.40130n

Speed tests are less than 100k when my laptop can get 29mb.
It's frustrating and I am thinking of binning the router.
Wifi settings are
Dual band only work in 2.4GHz band (802.11b/g/n)
I've split the 2.4 and 5ghz networks into different SSID's
any tips?
