Ok so my Archer T4U adaptor is connected via the 5Ghz band to my Linksys WRT1900ac router using 802.11ac but even when the TP-Link software reports a signal strength of 100% my connection rate never exceeds 390Mbps.

Also the latest driver downloaded from the website

Archer T4U_V1_150602

Published Date
02/06/15

windows reports the driver date as 14/11/2013 and version 1024.6.1016.2013. Yes that could be a error with the date but after doing some googling even that driver version is old for the chipset used in this adaptor which kind of goes hand in hand with the driver date.

I have done quite a bit of searching for a Realtek driver RTL8812AU but there seems to be nothing except linux stuff which is quite annoying.

Anyone well versed with this USB adaptor?

Are there any other wireless clients connecting to WRT1900ac? How about the connection speed?
What's the channel width of 5GHz band on your router?

I've tried with the 2.4GHz band turned off and my pc (using T4U) being the only connected client.

The channel width is 80MHz, I just changed the channel width to 40MHz to see what impact it had on the connection rate and it did drop to about 240Mbps, interestingly though when setting it back to 80MHz the signal strength is pretty consistent at around 80% (390Mbps) with the odd blip as high as 87% (520Mbps which I have not seen before).
I am going to try putting the router in the same room to see how high the rate goes and I can put it down to the signal quality, this however doesn't explain why the 'newest' driver is almost 2 years old.
