No idea when this started happening, but just noticed it when I was trying to resolve a timestamp problem with my media player that has been an issue for months. No updates to the router were made at that time, and the router is not being used as a bridge. It's directly connected to my broadband router via ethernet cable (WAN port).
Under System Tools->Time Settings, when I click "Get GMT", the following error is returned:
Error code: 5028
Get GMT unsuccessfully, make sure that you have already connected to Internet.
I've tried many different NPT servers, URLs as well as IPs, but always get the same error. Under System Tools->Diagnostic, I can successfully ping all of the NPT servers. My internet access via both LAN cable and WiFi work flawlessly with many devices (with the exception of this issue).
Even though I'm not using it as a bridge/WiFi access point, I've also tried the static routing workaround suggested here with no success.
I've also tried upgrading to the latest firmware (from 13050), which did not resolve the issue.
Any ideas? I've been searching for days and haven't found a solution.

Starting to think my ISP may have started blocking port 123. I've raised the issue to them and will update this thread when I receive a response.

My ISP claims to not be blocking port 123, which sounds reasonable, as updating my OS time works when directly connected to the modem, but doesn't when connected via the router. Looks like it's a problem with the router.

Likely culprit is network latency. According to the techs at TP-Link; if the response time from the NTP servers is > 500ms, the request times out and error 5028 is thrown. This is consistent with my ping results of 650 - 750ms. So the big question is can this 500ms constraint be changed? I can't find this information anywhere, so I'm guessing not. I'd install DD-WRT, but I can't find a way to configure it there either.
I assume this is due to being on satellite, but it's odd because I wasn't having this time issue with my laptop & media player last summer.

That will be a rare issue. There is little thing you can do to improve the latency.:eek:
Have you also tried openWRT, maybe openwrt has a different timeout.

Howdy, you are not alone with this problem. I just replaced my old Asus with a WR1043ND V2 and have the same problem. I too am on Xplornet satellite internet. Both my old Asus RTN12 and older Dlink 615 did the time sync with NTP servers fine. I have submitted a ticket to tech support and am waiting for a reply. Am using the latest posted firmware 140613.
